It is impossible to say how many exactly.

Yes, it is difficult to count exactly because you never know if the person underneath is a cross dresser.

concede that it is a frontal expression of Islamic identity Wouldn’t a wristband work just a well, or a funky ball cap? Especially in hot weather.

I’ve got a better expression...leave Britain.

"For me it is not just a piece of clothing, it's an act of faith, it's solidarity," said a 24-year-old program scheduler at a broadcasting company in London, who would allow only her last name, Al Shaikh, to be printed, saying she wanted to protect her privacy. "9/11 was a wake-up call for young Muslims," she said. [emphasis mine]

I am offended by this tent that they call the niqab. Call it what you want, dudes, but it is still a freaking tent! We live in a free society, folks. How can we tolerate one segment of our society forcing its female members to melt and roast and sweat in an ugly tent while the men sport about in regular clothing???? It is discrimation - and isn’t that illegal? It is torture. There is something inheritly wrong with this. We have seccurity cameras everywhere that cannot see through the tents - so that means that criminals can just wear the tent and we will never know their faces or even sex. Women fought too long for equality in the Western World to allow or even tolerate the wearing of the tent. Hey man - Does that mean I have the right to wear a Bill Clinton mask when I go the the bank? If Mrs Mohamed can wear a tent - then I can wear a Bill Clinton Mask.. We really do have to stop this garbage.

The only purpose served by a mask is to hide your identity for criminal purposes. The exceptions are the Long Ranger and Zorro.

Some who wear the niqab, particularly younger women who have taken it up recently, concede that it is a frontal expression of Islamic identity, which they have embraced since Sept. 11, 2001, as a form of rebellion against the policies of the Blair government in Iraq and at home.

Its an understandable response to the western attacks of Iraq on Sept 11th 2001

One day they should go out and gather up these women and take them directly to the airport and place them on a plane back to the first Islamic craphole that came up on the schedule. Next day they do the same thing. It wont be long before Islamic women start appearing in typical British dress.

Now that's twisted right there.

The grandparents of the current crop of Britons were made of sterner stuff. They would have handled this in short order. But after WWII everyone got so tolerant that they let millions of Moslems into the country and now are gobsmacked by what is happening.

I would like to remind everyone that there is a huge difference between the hijab (or hijab-like scarves) and the "head-to-toe" niqab, which is the proper subject of this thread.

I personally have no problem with any Muslim woman who chooses* to wear a hijab, whether for reasons of religious modesty or for cultural reasons.

But I do have problems with Muslim women, particularly in Western nations, adopting the niqab or the even more severe burqa, for reasons of national security, identification, etc.

*"Choose" being the operative word -- not being forced by shari'a law.

A point about this article which nobody has picked up is what it says about the attitudes of ordinary Britons to in-your-face Islam. The usual, and erroneous, consensus on this forum is that Britons are simply rolling over and allowing Islam to do what it likes. The trivial anecdotes in this piece give a flavour of how wrong that is.

A handful of young women wore the niqab and spoke effusively about their reasons. "Wearing the niqab means you will get a good grade and go to paradise," said Hodo Muse, 19, a Somali woman. "Every day people are giving me dirty looks for wearing it, but when you wear something for Allah you get a boost."

Pitiful.

From the article:
"A few weeks ago a lady said: 'I think you look crazy.' I said: 'How dare you go around telling people how to dress,' and walked off. Sometimes I feel I have to reply. Islam does teach you that you must defend your religion."

How about these head coverings, moron?
