JERUSALEM: Israel's defense minister has ordered the army to allow an unspecified number of Palestinians fleeing the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip to enter Israel, the Defense Ministry announced Wednesday.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed officials to let in "humanitarian cases," according to the announcement. That apparently meant people needing urgent medical treatment.

You all might want to read this: Gaza Evacuees About Face. It seems once these people who supposedly fled Gaza fearing that Hamas would kill them found out their refuge was going to be in Egypt rather that Israel they wanted to go back to Gaza. To quote Yael: You don’t have to be in the Shin Bet to become suspicious of their motives for wanting into Israel given this turn-about.

In fairness to Prime Minister Olmert and Defense Minister Barak the only Palestinians who have remained in Israel as a result of this are severly injured people in hospitals. Everyone else received free transportation either to the West Bank or Egypt.

This comment should NOT be construed as support for the current Israeli government by me. I’m just pointing out that they aren’t quite as stupid as the Herald-Tribune made them seem.

Israel's still trying to play nice guy, and that's good, while the Palis are still on the warpath with each other. The only thing that's ever united them is war with Israel, and if Israel doesn't give them a good reason to unite, they will keep fighting with each other.

Letting a bunch of sickly Gazans traverse Israel on their way to the West Bank is not going to threaten Israel.
