COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, a former real estate developer who became a rising political star after his election last year, was indicted Tuesday on federal cocaine charges.
Ravenel is also the state chairman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.
Ravenel has stepped down from his volunteer responsibilities with the campaign, according to a statement released by Mark Campbell, Giuliani's political director.
Campbell said the campaign has no information about the accusations pending against Ravenel.
The millionaire is accused of buying less than 500 grams of the drug to share with other people in late 2005, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said.
Ravenel, 44, is charged with distribution of cocaine, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Yes, but he makes it SO easy....Bernie Karick....
Is anyone keeping a list of Rudy’s criminal cronies?
That's over 17 OUNCES of powder COCAINE!!!!
Geez, how many friends did this guy have?
Add more! ;-)
Russell Harding ... child porn; graft, cronyism
Bernard Kerik ... whores, graft, hiring illegals, cronyism, incompetence [and mob friends]
Michael Chertoff ...
Thomas Ravenel ...(dealing crack)
Add Alan Placa to the list...... (groper of young boys)
I’m not a Rudy fan, but I don’t see how he could have known about an investigation like this unless someone told him. This isn’t the sort of thing that comes back on a “background check.” It’s quite possible that Thomas Ravenel didn’t even know he was being investigated.
The Lindsey Graham haters on FR sure know how to pick 'em. Not only was their "true conservative" pushing the GOP to nominate an abortion-luving, gun-grabbing, gay-cheerleader Arnold clone nationally, but he is also a cokehead (the latter fact about him possibly influencing his judgment on the first)
The irony is that if Lindsey Graham ever did start voting like the guy that the "True conservative" was pushing, they would actually have a point that Lindsey Graham had "gone maverick". Instead, Lindsey Graham's voting record in the Senate resemblences their hero Fred Thompson (solid on right to life, guns, pro-family, pro-ANWR drilling, pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, pro-WOT, but weak on immigration and Friend of McCain)
I'm still trying to figure out how they can say it's "Treasonous" for Graham to vote that way, but when Fred is weak on illegals and pro-McCain, we should promote him to leader of the free world. I certainly wouldn't want to put someone in charge of this the nation if they voted for something I consider "treasonous"
The same people telling us Fred Thompson is a winner and a conservative leader were saying that about Alan Keyes, George Allen, and Tom Ravenel. Not a good track record for picking "winners" here. Fred's a nice guy, but until we see otherwise, candidates like Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, and Tommy Thompson are stronger conservatives and much better records of leadership in office.
Considering Thomas Ravenel was the "no. #1 choice" of the Lindsey Graham haters to be the "true conservative" primary challenger to Lindsey, what does that say about them? They complain Lindsey has committed "treason" because he votes the wrong way 10% of the time, and they cast their lot with a Rudybot who had already been the subject of intense illegal drug rumors.
Or it’s only a few grams. “Less than 500 grams” can mean a lot of things.
This guy being a multimillionare, I'd wager better than even money that it was closer to 500 grams than 10 grams.
I hear you, BB. Lots of inconsistencies about favored candidates, and way too many similarities to Schwarzenegger’s, McCains, and the like.
And thanks for the last paragraph, especially. I knew you liked TommyT, but wasn’t sure who else you had on your list.
I’m in the undecided category as no one gives me 100%. Hunter comes closest to filling my top concerns.
“
That falls under the category of ‘unintended consequences’ for malfeasance in performing his duties as Mayor, i.e. *enforcing the laws*.
Rudy = poor judgment, and unfit to serve as President”
Bottom line!
Even better if Kerik sold the 500 grams to this guy : )
Even better if Kerik sold the 500 grams to this guy : )
They seem not to notice these conflicts and become inflamed when pointed out.
I maintain my position that one is defined by the company they keep dirt is dirt regardless of the name tag.
LOL!!
>> Boy, Rudy can pick them, cant he? <<
Of course if you guys are going to tie to this to "Bad judgement" of Rudy, let's not forget Ravenel was the no. #1 choice of the Lindsey Graham bashers to be their "true conservative" standard bearer to challenge Graham in the 2008 primary. Go on any Lindsey Graham thread from a couple of monthes ago if you don't believe it.
What does this say about THEIR judgement? Not to mention the fact the guy they touted as a "True conservative" was working for Rudy. So when Graham agrees with us 90% of the time, that's not good enough, but when Ravenel is trying to elect a guy who agrees with us 10% of the time, that's just fine.
Have you entertained the thougtht that the Graham-haters on FR just might care more about how a candidate looks and sounds on TV than the candidate's actual "record" in office? Might explain why Fred Thompson voted the exact same way as Graham as office, but they want to give him a promotion.
Good bye Rudy Tuesday
We can hang the blame on you
When you change with every new day
We’re sure gonna miss you................
“Drug Clearing House, how may I help you today sir?”
