Durham, NC -- On Monday, Duke University leaders announced they have reached a settlement with David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann. Below are statements about the settlement.
STATEMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE PRESIDENT OF DUKE UNIVERSITY:
This has been an extraordinary year for Duke students David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, who were accused of serious crimes they did not commit. In April, after a thorough review, the North Carolina Attorney General declared that they were innocent of all charges and that the charges never should have been brought. We welcomed their exoneration and deeply regret the difficult year they and their families have had to endure. They conducted themselves with great dignity during their long ordeal.
These young men and their families have been the subject of intense scrutiny that has taken a heavy toll. The Board of Trustees and the President have also determined that it is in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward. For these reasons, and after considerable deliberation, the trustees have agreed to a settlement with each student. Beyond this statement, the resolution is a private matter among the students, their families and Duke.
This past year has been hard for many people who care about Duke - for students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends - and for the three students and their families most of all. We resolve to bring the Duke family together again, and to work to protect others from similar injustices in the criminal justice system in the future.

When is Crystal Magnum to be prosecuted for filing a false complaint?
How about a loss of tenure for the gang of 88?
So when are they going to deal with the Gang of 88?
I hope that pole-snail has to give back Jesse hiJACKsons money. Or was it Al Sharptongue?
“We were the victims of a rogue prosecutor concerned only with winning an election, and others determined to railroad three Duke lacrosse players and to diminish the reputation of Duke University.”
1) Oh, so now THEY are the “victims” - frickin’ libs.
2) This had BETTER not clear the gang of 88 faculty who personally took it upon themselves to print the newspaper ad. They are all severally liable for their libel.
I really don’t see any sort of apology from Duke University regarding their official actions during this whole event.
I certainly wouldn’t expect an apology from the Gang of 88...but it would have been nice to see one from Duke.
Or should I assume that the out of court settlement is as close to an apology as Duke is gonna offer?
I wonder if this "settlement" will protect the 88 from individual lawsuits?
Nothing on that link says what the settlement is.
Since Duke takes federal money, shouldn’t we be able to find out the amounts of the settlements? My f-i-l (RIP) was an alumnus and donor. I’m sure he would have wanted to know.
It is good news and bad news. It is good news for the players but bad news in that the university id paying the damages done by the 88. I would have like to seen that bunch publicly tarred and feathered instead of protected by the university. As it is, they can go back and live quietly in the stinking liberal world of lies and mean-spiritedness until the next opportunity arises to persecute the innocent of a crime never committed.
Why don’t we ever hear about the sl*ts that started this whole thing?
I’ll bet that three players on the lacrosse team are all going to make more money this year than Krzyzewski.
I still want to hear about that group of 88. And I sincerely hope they got enough to cover the attorney’s fees and travel fees they have had to incur.
And some more zeroes after that.
“I certainly wouldnt expect an apology from the Gang of 88...”
Nope, they’ve already made a statement that they did nothing wrong.
You can google it and find their statement - it includes the (para)phrase “sexist and racist campus and country”.
I’m guessing all the legal bills were taken care of plus a tidy sum extra.
Must’ve been a generous settlement for those three young men to make such a positive statement about Duke University after the way many members of the faculty and staff conducted themselves.
Now the three can individually sue each of the 88 faculty members who defamed them. Once each of them has settled, the three ex-defendants should be independently wealthy.
