Police catch and escort TB patient to hospital

Judge orders man confined in San Antonio for treatment he had refused since April:

PORT ARTHUR — A Port Arthur tuberculosis patient was apprehended Thursday without incident after a judge ordered he be confined and treated at a San Antonio hospital, officials said.

Police picked up Lemone Yowman, 32, at a relative's home so he could be taken by ambulance to San Antonio with a police escort, said Maj. John Owens of the Port Arthur Police Department.

A judge has ordered that Yowman be confined and undergo treatment at a San Antonio facility, according to court documents and a city official.

William George, a Port Arthur health official, told The Associated Press that the man, whom court documents identified as Yowman, does not carry the drug-resistant form of TB that created a recent international scare. Other officials said there is no search under way for anyone who might have come in contact with Yowman.

However, George said Yowman poses a public health threat and should be confined and treated immediately, according to court documents that The Beaumont Enterprise obtained Wednesday.

City health and government officials said police have sought Yowman since June 8, when state District Judge Bob Wortham ordered him to go to the San Antonio facility.

The man, under Port Arthur Health Department care for the disease since January, has refused treatment since April, according to court documents.

The illness made worldwide headlines recently when Atlanta attorney Andrew Speaker was quarantined with a drug-resistant form of tuberculosis.

Judy Smith, a Port Arthur Health Department nurse, said if patients stop medication before completing a treatment program, it can result in more drug-resistant TB strains.

That’s a rather personal question.

What motivations could he have, I wonder, to refuse treatment?

There have been a number of people quarantined in recent weeks but when TB Andy originally made the news, we were told no one had been quarantined in decades.

What is it? The log jam suddenly clear?

I have heard that the highest percentage of TB patients per group is in the homeless.

Very hard to treat as they move around, do not keep their follow up appts etc. Also, as far as him refusing treatment a great many of the homeless are mentally ill so don’t react in their own best interests.

In addition to stupidity and/or insanity as Let's Roll noted, I'm told that the side effects are bad.

Well if they don't mention it, then you know that's the case.

Lemone Reginald Yowman was born in Galveston in '74. Charged with two felonies in 93. Married Dessie Prevost in 2000. And he filed a lawsuit against Huntsman Fuels LP along with wife Dessie and other relatives Kenneth Wayne, Hazel, Lemone Sr., Lemonica and Steven in April of this year.

That's all I could find on this guy.

That was word games. There were no "federal" quarantines of TB patients, but many "state" quarantines every year, or the other way around. They made it sound like nobody had never been quarantined before.

Maybe it’s the government that’s mentally unstable. Aren’t they always sticking their beaks into our lives, telling us what not to do. All of a sudden it’s some homeless guy and it’s “hands off”?

He lives near the border so it’s possible he contracted it from an illegal.

“What motivations could he have, I wonder, to refuse treatment?”

My guess would be that he’s a junkie and repeatedly failed to show up for appointments or he doesn’t want to do inpatient treatment because it would interfere with his habit.

Port Arthur, right on the Gulf on the TX / LA border, is about 450 miles from the nearest border crossing (Brownsville, TX).

And actually, I'm surprised that they took him all the way from Port Arthur to San Antonio...I would think Houston would have some type of TB facilities. It's much closer anyways. But I guess not.
