4 indicted in death of migrant worker Saturday, June 16, 2007 By Bruce Hamilton

A St. Tammany Parish grand jury has indicted four teenagers on second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of an El Salvadoran man killed during a bungled robbery April 29, according to the district attorney's office. The four teenagers are charged in the death of Jose Luis Martinez-Carpio, 36, who was shot three times in the torso.

Police said he grabbed a kitchen utensil to fend off two masked men who stormed the trailer he shared with six other migrant workers. Sheriff Jack Strain said the seven workers were in the country illegally, one from Mexico and the others from El Salvador.

Investigators believe they were targeted because the robbers expected them to keep lots of cash on hand, according to Strain. Martinez-Carpio was cooking when the assailants burst into the trailer at 35591 Madison St., off Bayou Liberty Road west of Slidell. After he was shot, the masked men fled empty-handed. The victim was taken to Slidell Memorial Hospital and declared dead.

Police booked the alleged triggerman, Glenn Carter, 17, of New Orleans; another gunman, Jace Washington, 19, of Slidell; and two alleged accomplices, Edric Cooper, 19, of Slidell; and Grant Gethers, 18, of New Orleans. The grand jury also charged them with attempted murder, according to district attorney spokesman Rick Wood. He said that charge stems from the fact that the gunmen fired at other residents of the trailer, an allegation previously not disclosed by police.

The definition of second-degree murder includes the killing of a human "when the offender is engaged in the perpetration" of aggravated burglary, which may apply to all four teens, not only the alleged triggerman.

The victim may have been an illegal but he didn't deserve this. He did try to fight them off.

Life is a God given right, not a civil right, whether they have legal status or not. As far as I’m concerned these little gangbangers should get the death penalty. They’ll just be more hardened criminals when they get out. Maybe they’ll be recruited by the radical muslims. Prison is where they find their converts.

From what I recall of this orgininal story they were inner city gang members, looking for an easy target. They figured an alien would have cash.

I recall this story because it is the only one I’ve ever seen (and I’ve challenged many to show me others)where US citizens killed an illegal alien. We have tens of thousands of American victims at the hands of illegal aliens.

If he’d stayed home, he’d be alive.

Usually, illegals kill each other for drugs or money, not Americans. Americans are almost always victims of illegals.

Brilliant. Do you excuse strong-arm robbery in other situations as well?

You can’t be killed in the United States if you never leave El Salvador. Oh, and friend of mine was almost a victim of a robbery but he shot the bastard.

It doesn’t look like an excuse to me, it looks like a true statement. If he had not been here in this country illegally then he would probably still be alive.

Oh, and friend of mine was almost a victim of a robbery but he shot the bastard.

I have to admit I'm of two minds about that.

Kill'm, and be rid of the probelm forever, without involving tax money;

...or maim'm horribly, so they can spend a long, painful life thinking about what they did, while physically unable to try it again.

I think I'd just keep firing until the magazine was empty.

If he’d stayed home, he’d be alive.

Or if they all kept their money in an accout with Bank of America.

I guess this is what Bush meant "vulnerable and exploited"

If he’d stayed home, he’d be alive.

An insipid remark. The same could be said about anyone who's similarly victimized once they step outside their home.

Stepping outside of your home is not illegal.

Stepping outside of your home is not illegal.

Specious. What lurks behind your comment and others here is the sentiment that the dead man is somehow less a victim because of his immigration status. As if the inalienable right to life only belongs to legal citizens.

Crossing into the United States without proper documentation is.

Correction:

Specious. What lurks behind your comment and others here is the sentiment that the dead man is somehow less a victim because of his immigration status. As if the inalienable right to life only belongs to legal citizens those who are in this country legally.

I think you misread the intent of Anjin's remark. He was trying to make the same point to me. He's on your side of the issue.

Whatever.

The fact remains that if he'd stayed in his own country he would most likely still be alive today.

That being said, I hope every single one of the creeps who killed this man get the needle.

It appears from the comments that the only place that notion is lurking is in your head.

Stupid teenage barbarians. Thought they’d victimize this man, huh? I guess they thought he wouldn’t fight back. They deserve all the punishment they get.

He’s not less of a victim IMO. Those that killed him should be given a fair trial and hanged. I just don’t have any sympathy for him.

True colors are surfacing. Thank you for your unintended expositional post. It speaks volumes.
