Early Morning Earthquake Swarm Beneath Kilauea's Upper East Rift Zone
About 70 shallow earthquakes in 2 hours occurred beneath the upper east rift zone of Kilauea early this morning. The swarm began at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 and is ongoing. The earthquakes are centered 1 km (1 mile) southwest of Mauna Ulu and are concentrated between 1.5 and 3 kilometers (1-2 miles) deep. As of 4:30 a.m., ten of the quakes had magnitudes greater than 3 and were felt by nearby residents. All data so far is consistent with the event being a shallow intrusion of magma. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is watching the situation closely and has deployed field crews to the scene.
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has taken the following precautionary measures:

Does this mean it’s not as bad as it could be?
I told Bobby to put back that Idol.........
And don't forget the gin!
That means the lava is only up to your knees.

Shallow means near surface. So, that's "good" if you're looking for a spectacle.
Potentially not so good otherwise.
I was watching Ultimate Tsunami the other night on the National Geographic channel and there ultimate tsunami was Kilauea erupting and causing a massive landslide into the pacific causing a 100’ tall wave to hit Honolulu. Scary stuff.
Was in Hawaii a few years ago with my family. We took a tour to the Kileua Park area. On the way the guide ( a raving enviro) talked about how much unemployment they had and how terrible it was on the locals. I then noticed a bunch of cars with a “No Rockets” bumper stickers. The guide explained it was locals against having a private rocket launch facility. The main objection was the pollution from the rocket launches, despite the fact this would bring in LOTS of good high paying jobs and a whole lot of support industries to make this the “Caneveral of the Pacific.” MY comment, “ let me get this straight, you guys have a Volcano which has been in continuous eruption for more then 20 years and you are worried about a few commercial rocket launches? DID NOT endear me to the Gaia worshiping tour guide....
Someone must have been munching on all those Pele fruit gifts.
According to USGS some quakes are happening on the west side of the island as well.
But Hilo (near the volcano) is a depressed area because they fight new business coming in.
Good for you. I'm glad you pointed out the lack of logic in what the guy said.
The island of Hawaii is by far the largest, thus it is called “ the big Island” but, it has always been the least in growth and business. Maui is the fastest growing for residents and business. ( and we have the best beaches)
Kona on the Big Island is growing by leaps and bounds. Hilo on the Big Island is dead.
Maui always does well.
