Four years after UCSF officials successfully defended the controversial work of an AIDS researcher under attack by a Republican-controlled Congress, the university is ousting the veteran professor, leaving up to $1 million in his grant money unspent and the future of HIV prevention programs for transgender people in doubt.
Tooru Nemoto, 56, is a Japanese citizen and longtime U.S. resident. He has been studying Asian and transgender AIDS issues for much of his 16-year career at UCSF, and he charges that the university's decision not to renew his contract is motivated by racial prejudice, and lack of concern about his transgender clientele.
Nemoto charges that his pronunciation of English was ridiculed by an official at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, or CAPS, the UCSF organization for which he worked as an associate professor.
"I felt I was being harassed because of my national background,'' Nemoto said. "UCSF and CAPS have a poor record of hiring, retaining and promoting minority faculty.''
Dr. Talmadge King, chairman of the UCSF Department of Medicine, which holds jurisdiction over the CAPS program, said Nemoto had expressed a concern about discrimination in the past. "To my knowledge, I think it is unfounded,'' he said. "There's a process for him to follow up on that.''
CAPS declined to renew his appointment in March, and unless his appeal is successful Nemoto will be out of a job at the end of this month.
Among the programs likely to lose funding with his departure is the TRANS project, which was to complete its fifth and final year beginning in July. The $400,000-a-year grant was funded by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and its goal was to enroll transgender drug users into substance abuse treatment.

More likely the latter. Of course no one cares about _freaks_.
There is not one person alive today, researcher or high school drop out or anyone in between academically, who does not know how to prevent AIDS!! This grant money is not needed nor is the research.
Hah! San Francisco worships its freaks.
Is this professor running a research project or a trannie whorehouse?
Here's my HIV prevention program for transgender people:
(a)If you haven't cut your package off yet, don't stick it in other men's butts.
(b) If you have already cut your package off, don't let other men stick theirs up your butt, or any other hole left after your surgery.
(c)If you've had a package added, see (a).
Standing by for my one million dollar grant.
I would only add: don’t play pass the needle.
LOL as if there was such a thing. Frightened for them, well yes, definately when it comes to their souls!
HIV is 100% preventable.
“the university is ousting the veteran professor, leaving up to $1 million in his grant money unspent and the future of HIV prevention programs for transgender people in doubt.”
What would HIV prevention for transgendered people amount to, a bucket of bleach and a raincoat?
I once asked an old dude how to prevent AIDS and he glared at me and said, “Sit down and shut up.”
I was too scared to ask him again.
Been there, Seen it.
I reflected before posting, and realized that a revulsion for such things was not learned behaviour. My parents or teachers did not train me to feel that way. We considered gays to be..well.. queer,as in "Not like us", but it did not produce the same instant disgust. Indeed, we were amused at the thought that "two boys wanted to get married." Now, consider this mental exercise:
You are rototilling your garden, and you turn up something that looked like Michael Jackson., a product of on-demand surgery run amock, something grotesque of uncertain gender.
Would not your first impulse be to grab a shovel, and dispatch it quickly and mercifully?
I think the reaction is primal and archetypal. Gays look like "us"-We can shrug, marvel, and move on.
These things, however, carry about them a distilled essence of "Wrongness", because it is chosen, willful self-mutilation.

You had two things, I had one. I’m willing to go 33.3%
And what about the finder's fee?
Now you’re cutting into the profits. I say we pad the proposal and split the difference. After all it’s just government money!
