Trent Lott: 'Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem'
The New York Times ^ | June 15, 2007 | ROBERT PEAR and JEFF ZELENY

Comments by Republican senators on Thursday suggested that they were feeling the heat from conservative critics of the bill, who object to provisions offering legal status. The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

“Free Speech is ruining America. We have to deal with that problem.”

Wanted his words to reflect what he really meant.

That’s what it boils down to. Can’t believe I’ve supported this ass. He’s gotten his last vote from me.

I was ashamed of you people in Mississippi who reelected this epitome of a politician. I was sick to my stomach then and I am now! REMOVE HIM FROM OFFICE. If I see his lying face on my television screen I will throw a cinder block through it.

My disdain for Trent-Lies-A-Lott is parallel to that of the most far left-wing Bush critic.

“Free Speech is ruining America. We have to deal with that problem.”

What insight — I’m going to post it on Lott’s website if I can. Thanks!

"How exactly Trent Lott sees this as a problem that he needs to solve is beyond me."

Replace the words "talk radio" with "the citizens" and you'll see what Trent's real beef is.

"Talk radio is running America."

If talk radio were running America, Congress and the president wouldn't be trying to shove this monstrous immigration bill down our throats. Lott is sounding like a liberal, for whom Rush and Fox News somehow brainwash the entire country.

“Having Senators think THEY run the country is really the problem. Let’s help them all get REAL jobs.”

You are absolutely and decisively correct. The Senate, the House, and indeed most elected offices are essentially ‘country clubs’ and what most of our elected officials do is spend their pitiful existences trying to maintain their membership. It’s essential to the future of this country that we reinstate the status of the people as the employers of these morons. They think our money is their money, our efforts are secondary to theirs, and that we somehow need their guidance to know how to live. The only answer as I see it is very strong, very strict term limits for all elected federal officials.

I think this is a threat-Bush calls us bigots and basically says no amnesty=no enforcement. Next threat, we are going fix you, we are coming after Talk Radio-how dare ‘we little people’ question our betters? Why Trent is way smarter than us...just ask him.

Talk radio is the modern day equivalent of the printing press on every corner days of old. (That is until corporate print ran them out of business).

Time magazine: "Electronic populism threatens to short-circuit representative democracy."

Translation: "People are saying things on the radio that we don't agree with, and this has got to stop."

Our party elite from Bush to Mel to Trent are out to destroy the party. I have no earthly idea how they think we can benefit as a party if they continue to attack the base that got them elected.

The only thing I can say in defense of Bush on the immigration issue is this: I don’t remember him ever taking a position on this topic other than the one he’s taking now. I don’t see this is a flip-flop or betrayal, but simply as a case where he strongly disagrees with the base that elected him. Bush is not now, and never was, a Pat Buchanan Republican.
