I used to think tarring and feathering was an antiquated, silly, anachronistic practice. Virtually every day now, I grow more and more to see how practical a gesture it really was, and how much we’ve lost since we abandoned its practice.

Not to mention more serious measures, such as public horse-whipping and, er, ‘piking’.
