Excerpt -

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Justice Department is investigating U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's meeting with a former top aide about the controversial firing of federal prosecutors last year, according to a letter released on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary committee.

In testimony before the House Judiciary committee, the former aide, Monica Goodling, said Gonzales told her about his recollections of the dismissals in March, shortly before she resigned.

Gonzales, in earlier testimony before the committee, said he had not gone back to talk to staff involved in the firings "in order to protect the integrity" of the investigations.

Senate Judiciary committee Chairman Patrick Leahy and Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the panel's senior Republican, last week asked Justice Department investigators whether an internal probe includes the meeting Goodling testified about.

The Justice Department's Office of Inspector General (OIG) and Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) confirmed in a letter to the Senate panel that their joint investigation "does include this matter."

A Justice Department spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.

Good God, what a stupid "controversy".

The Dems sure are working overtime on their "impeachment bait".

Gonzales should tell them, under oath:

“I fired them because I wanted to. I’m not sorry.”

It ain’t about impeachment. It’s about a death by a thousand cuts.

Didn’t Gonzales recently try to strike a deal with the Dims and Sen. Lautenburg to grant him the sole power to stop gun sales to the law abiding ?

I think it IS about impeachment.

The NBC news led the other night with the ruling against Bush's "overreaching" his authority on Gitmo.

All of this stuff will be packaged together as proof W should be impeached.

You underestimate the Dems' desire for revenge for Billy, and overestimate their good political sense.

They want BLOOD.

A lot of people speculate that this is about impeachment. Gonzalez may be worthless, however he is loyal to the President. The Democrats would have a big say in the next appointment. The President has never been more isolated and vulnerable than he is at this moment in history.

Barring a major tragedy/attack or other significant world event, this is the route the Socialist Democrats are going to take us.

Well, They would if they could bring their own approval numbers up above 20%.

At any rate, the Gonzalez issue is a function of impeachment, IMHO.

A lot of people speculate...

That sounds about as credible as a CBS broadcast. "A lot" includes Ted, John, Fred and that guy at the bar with the really red nose who shoots down martinis like they were water.

"A lot" means this is debated frequently and agreed upon on several threads here at FR. Don't want to mislead here. Some very good commentary on the subject has convinced me. : )

Well-put.

As you point out, the Dems are in the toilet in terms of ratings, and I think they are SO low (in both sense of the word) that their attitude is "How badly could this hurt us?" Aside from their lust to hit back over Clinton's impeachment, they may think the country will hate them at first but later love them for ridding the country of the evil Bush.

If they were thinking clearly, they wouldn't BE democrats.
