Infant Dies Of Infection After Circumcision In Canada Hospital

Ottawa, ON (AHN) - A medical journal has reported a case of a one-week-old infant who died from complications after being circumcised in an unidentified hospital in Ontario, Canada.

In its April 2007 edition, Paediatrics and Child Health reported a case in which an infant, whose parents did not want him identified, was brought back to his family doctor by his parents 5 hours after he had been circumcised. At that time, his parents said he was "very irritable and had blue discoloration below the umbilicus when he cried." The baby's physicians sent the child home.

The baby's parents took him to another hospital 14 hours after his circumcision because he was still irritable and his penis was swollen. Dr. Jim Cairns, who is the deputy chief coroner in Ontario, said that at that time, doctors found the baby's bladder was "seven or eight times its normal size."

The baby boy subsequently died after going into septic shock, which Dr. Cairns said is "an overwhelming infection, leading to multi-organ failure."

Dr. Cairns, who became involved because the provincial coroner's office must review all deaths of all children younger than 5 in the province of Ontario, said that death is a rare complication of circumcision.

I’ve got no problems with it either, although the AAP advises against it.

Right you are. BTW, I picked up some information from the urologist that I will follow all the time. Those yeast infections (which men can also get) are no fun at all and can be a bear to knock out. When daily showering, use of Head and Shoulders and/or its equivalent will help to keep this problem down to a minimum. Diabetics and presumably pre-diabetics with urine leakage are a prime breeding ground for yeast infections. A circumcised adult should have minimum chance of this occurence. It is hardly a barbaric procedure as one person here claimed. It helps prevent infections and also other much more serious problems. The foreskin might have had its place among cavemen running naked through the bush but hardly in today’s world.

Here’s another tip. I have an allergy to anti-persperants. I read that if the underarms are shaved that will solve the odor problem and then I just use regular deodarants. May not be “manly” but I’m going to do what is required. Also helped knock out a fungal problem that was developing.

He only started talking about Cuba after he had been blasted for his comments about how great Canada’s health care was...

Even Elton John’s husband(?) commented on how bad the Canadian system was, and how EJ’s father-in-law had to leave Canada to get treatment in an American hospital.

I am no fan of socialized medicine but the link to socialized medicine being the cause is where? I might have mssed it but did the article cite a history that might lead one to conclude a cause and effect? Or os that your hypothesis because it happens to be Canada? DO you think this never happens in US hospitals?

I'm kind of new here, are you the editor of FR?

Five hours later, the parents returned to the hospital with the infant, who had become “irritable and had blue discolouration” below the belly button.

Doctors noted the symptoms but decided the boy was not ill enough to be admitted. I have not read of this happening in the US. Many articles are posted on FR I may not find newsworthy, but I do not complain to the poster about it. Mods will move it to smokey backroom. If not newsworthy to you, do not click on it or hit the report abuse button. Have a nice day.

“I’m sure it didn’t stop you but you likely need libricant. “

What the hell? I assume you meant lubricant. If so, I have to believe you are a female that has no idea what to do with a penis. I mean, that has to be the single most ridiculous statement ever written on this forum.

No, I'm not the editor. Neither did I report it as abuse or report you to the moderator.

Those points aside, it was hardly newsworthy.

One of the aspects of FR that make it unique is that posters assume responsibility for their posts. If you put it out in the public domain you should be prepared to defend your position. If not, why post in the first place?

It got 88 responses, apparently some people thought it was worth commenting on. I believe it is a link to socialized medicine. If you do not that is your opinion and I could care less. You know what they say about opinions, like a holes, everybody’s got one, and some stink worse than others. I do not think Paris Hilton is newsworthy, but I do not chastise people who post threads about her.

Your post said nothing about socialized medicine. The article reported a one time incident and there was no cause/effect stated or implied. If that is what you thought is was you should have taken a position. But apparently you didn’t have the cajones.
