Bush to lock funds for border security (gag alert)

WASHINGTON - President Bush , trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.

Bush got behind a propos, , ) of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.

The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.

With many questions unanswered, it was unclear how much of a concession the move amounts to for Bush.

A bipartisan group of senators crafted a fragile compromise on the immigration bill that Bush supports. But the deal is in deep trouble, because many Republicans oppose that it provides a way for millions of immigrants who entered the country illegally to become legal.

Bush said the bill emphasizes security by requiring tougher border and workplace measures before new options for immigrants and guest workers could begin. Already, he said, border agents are capturing and sending home huge numbers of people trying to cross illegally.

The legislation stalled last week when only seven GOP senators supported a Democratic bid to limit debate — called a cloture vote — and expedite a final vote.

"We feel confident there are going to be enough votes for cloture," he said.

But can you confidently say that about the Republican Senators who defied GWB the first time around

About half of them give or take a few.

Depressing indeed.

Is this a sophisticated form of blackmail, or am I confused?

That's how it looks to me and I am not buying it. The fence and the money to build it were appropriated so spend the money and build the fence. NO AMNESTY EVER! You don't reward people for breaking the law!

“The President is trying to bribe the public?”

No, Chambliss, Graham, etc. heard from the people about Bush, knew the people were correct, tried to create a band aid to salve the wound.

This provision is Graham’s, etc. admitting they know Bush wouldn’t have enforced the law.

The base has played the fool for this President for so long that he thinks we will do so forever.

In my case, he is wrong. I left a message telling him so this morning. I also told the RNC. And I am in the process of telling my Senators.

I learned a long time ago that one is happier if they do not insist on hanging around where they are not wanted. If the Republican Party allows this bill to be revived, they are saying loud and clear, ‘We don’t want you’. And they will get their wish.

If we lose this fight, it will be interesting watching the Republican party go the way of the Whigs...at least, from an abstract, historical perspective.

>>Those in Washington are about to find out that some people cannot be bought...unlike them.

People who cannot be bought scare the living daylights out of the politico hacks in DC. So we must be demonized, called extremists, radicals, or worse names. We must be discredited at all costs.

Unconstutional.
All funding must be approved by the House and they aren't going to pass it.

>>Be prepared for about a hundred more.

Yes, exactly.

They honestly believe we will relent at some point, that we will come home to good old GWB.

This is war, a war of attrition.

Why should we fall victim to the Stockholm Syndrome?

Not from what I read.
It's the President that's doing the bribing. The others are just supplying the money.

“While I agree he can’t be trusted on this, I don’t believe he’s ‘against America’ thats a bit over the top.”

Well, he is against the will of 71% of Americans (US citizens).

What is America? Isn’t America (US) populated by Americans (citizens)?

Are you referring to rocks, trees, mosquitoes and chipmunks when you refer to America?

Bush is about as against America as anyone could be.

When is the last time 71% of Americans (US citizens) agreed on anything?

Hell you’d get a lesser polling number if the pole asked if the sun rises in the east and sets in the west!

Forget locking the funds! BUILD THE FENCE! It is the law, the money has been appropriated already, build it!

You mean the previously passed legislation did not “lock” funds for the fence that has not been built and the increase in BP personnel? Huh, I thought legislation did that sort of thing unless of course it is one of those unfunded mandates.

This is ridiculous. I want to know what they know that we do not. Something is afoot here and it infests both sides of the aisle.

Also, NO AMNESTY.
