WASHINGTON - President Bush , trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.
Bush got behind a propos, , ) of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.
The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.
With many questions unanswered, it was unclear how much of a concession the move amounts to for Bush.
A bipartisan group of senators crafted a fragile compromise on the immigration bill that Bush supports. But the deal is in deep trouble, because many Republicans oppose that it provides a way for millions of immigrants who entered the country illegally to become legal.
Bush said the bill emphasizes security by requiring tougher border and workplace measures before new options for immigrants and guest workers could begin. Already, he said, border agents are capturing and sending home huge numbers of people trying to cross illegally.
The legislation stalled last week when only seven GOP senators supported a Democratic bid to limit debate called a cloture vote and expedite a final vote.
"We feel confident there are going to be enough votes for cloture," he said.
Arbusto please stop, you’re further embarrassing yourself.
He’s not going to put it in Al Gore’s “Lock-Box” is he?
I just got a republican party census in the mail. It is designed with answers to be yes, no or undecided. Under each one, I am writing as much as I can because filling in the bubble does not do it for me.
A new low has been hit.
and after seeing him think he can manipulate the American People this way...
I'm beginning to think President Bush may be just about as ignorant as others have been alleging, all these years.
Those in Washington are about to find out that some people cannot be bought...unlike them.
Is this the same “Lock Box” that Al Gore used when he was vice president?
What a sham.
Despite the reason Bush and others have for amnesty, I am wondering why they are putting us in harms way? They know how very dangerous this is for the American public. I am pretty sure they don’t care about our way of life; but to deliberatly put us in a situation where our people can be seriously hurt, is beyond my comprehension.
‘just got a republican party census in the mail. It is designed with answers to be yes, no or undecided. Under each one, I am writing as much as I can because filling in the bubble does not do it for me.’
I got one from Boehner a couple of weeks back and did the same. IN the comments section I noted ‘No donations to the RNC or any Republican til the border is secured, and the Amnesty bill is dumped.”
I hope they got millions of similiar responses.
Indeed we are not. But can you confidently say that about the Republican Senators who defied GWB the first time around? This time they have a plausible excuse to justify switching their vote.
Simply writing angrily on this and other threads won’t get us anywhere. Don’t forget your daily calls to your US Senate, Congress Critter, POTUS etc.
What are you smoking? Why doesn’t he help Liddy, and the border guards that are in prison? if he’s such a good guy,and I voted for him twice!!
Just citing him against himself. If I disagree with him about amnesty for illegals and he can say that I and others similarly situated don't want what is good for America, and he did, then I can say that he is untrustworthy because he doesn't want what is good for America.
Accordingly, either he and I are both over the top, or neither of us is.
Still. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
This plan shows that our schools are truly failing in math education - and common sense.
Who will pay these fines that will pay back the $4.4 billion in loans for this border security? By a stroke of the pen all 20 million illegals here now will be legal, thus no fines could be extracted from employers who now have legal employees. These employees will not have to pay a $5000 fee unless they want to go for citizenship.
This would mean that to raise the $4.4 billion in fines, at $5000 a head, we would need 880,000 new illegals to be caught and their employers fined. Given a current detection rate of 1 in 4, another 3.5 million illegals will have to come across to raise the $4.4 billion.
Knowing the way government works, we will probably have an incentive program to entice these new illegals acrosss the border to make the program work.
Geeeshh. I think we are entering a new Dark Age.
To Graham, Kyl, Chambliss, Isakson and lurking aides,
You heard the criticisms from the people
You might have been surprised how knowledgable the people were
And in your heart you knew they were right
This is a bogus bone tossed to us
Not falling for it, even if I thought Bush might enforce it
No $4.4 billion for instant legalization forever on Z Visas (yes, we know what those run around green cards are)
Don’t think for a second supporting this will gain one vote back, sway one opinion.
It just exemplifies you knew and know deep in your heart George Bush is a deceitful, lying man and has and will not enforce the laws of this country when he doesn’t feel doing so..
Is this a sophisticated form of blackmail, or am I confused?
Be prepared for about a hundred more.
“I am pretty sure they dont care about our way of life...”
That is over the top. You can/should question his judgement, choices, and reasoning but don’t have to resort to that all or nothing viewpoint.
