Five-ounce tubes of toothpaste labeled Colgate and sold in discount stores in four states are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical, according to the importer.

A Food and Drug Administration official, Doug Arbesfeld, confirmed that testing had found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label. But he said the agency is unsure if it is really Colgate or a counterfeit.

I remember back in the late 50’s I used the powdered toothpastes in the metal can with the plastic cap. They must have been baking soda based. Anyone else remember?

CAVEAT CAVEAT CAVEAT! Do NOT swallow this mix! Do not put in your eyes! Do not smear on clothing, mash in hair, eat for dessert, or otherwise do anything with this formula! May cause distress, balding, harm, death, odors, or even the condition known as “hot-dog fingers”!

I really don’t know if any of that would happen, but hey, I’m just sayin’...

-———Okay, back to the discussion-———

I use one teaspoon of equal parts baking soda and salt, THEN add the liquids right before using it - one quarter teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and probably 1/8 teaspoon of vinegar. If you add the liquids any earlier, you just get mush... wait til time of use, and you get foamy good action!

My toothpaste only says "Distributed by." Doesn't say where it's made.

I can’t find this on the Colgate site but this site purports to contain a statement from Colgate apparently confirming this is a counterfeit product issue.

Why didn’t the FDA make this clear yesterday and why didn’t the FDA indicate the country the counterfeit product originated from?

States issue imported Colgate recall

The Colgate-Palmolive Company today warned that counterfeit toothpaste falsely packaged as “Colgate” has been found in several dollar-type discount stores in four states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain Diethylene Glycol. The Company stated that it does not use, nor has ever used, Diethylene Glycol as an ingredient in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world.

The counterfeit toothpaste can be easily recognized because it is labelled as “Manufactured in South Africa.” Colgate does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa. In addition, the counterfeit packages examined so far have several misspellings including: “isclinically”, “SOUTH AFRLCA” and “South African Dental Assoxiation.”

Counterfeit toothpaste is not manufactured or distributed by Colgate and has no connection with the Company whatsoever. Colgate is working closely with the US FDA to help to identify those responsible for the counterfeit product.

Consumers who suspect they may have purchased counterfeit product, can call Colgate’s toll-free number at 1 800 468 6502.

About Colgate-Palmolive: Colgate-Palmolive is a leading global consumer products company, tightly focused on Oral Care, Personal Care, Home Care and Pet Nutrition. Colgate sells its products in over 200 countries and territories around the world under such internationally recognized brand names as Colgate, Palmolive, Mennen, Softsoap, Irish Spring, Protex, Sorriso, Kolynos, Elmex, Tom’s of Maine, Ajax, Axion, Soupline, and Suavitel, as well as Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet. For more information about Colgate’s global business, visit the Company’s web site at www.colgate.com.

This really seems to indicate a China connection.

Where’s the FDA and what are they going to do about it?

Another good reason to avoid Dollar stores, because of the cheap imported crap they sell. Often times, other countries do not respect trademarks and brands. they are unregulated, so brands mean nothing over there.

In the business I work in, I had people try to sell me an imported crap item that is branded and packaged like a more expensive American version. I passed on the item, but some competitors did bring it in. The American Co. whose trade mark was being infringed took action, and sales of the product ceased, and the ones that had been placed in stores had to be recalled.

I’ve been in Purchasing and know exactly what you are saying.

- “Safety Glass” that was never certified and broke into sharp pieces if you looked at it wrong.

- Hand tools that failed catastrophically on the first use.

- Flame retardant materials that went up like a torch.

What is scary is that many US Companies are so bottom line orientated that safety or performance takes a back seat to the margin.

I could tell you stories........
