The favorable portrait of honest and hard-working illegal immigrants who simply want to feed their families was shattered when federal agents arrested dozens of undocumented workers using dead and elderly Americans Social Security numbers along with previously deported criminals at an Oregon food processing plant.
More than 165 undocumented workers were arrested in the raid at a major Portland fruit and vegetable processing plant for food giant Del Monte. At least 90 employees had fraudulent Social Security cards and many used the real Social Securities of juveniles, the elderly and the deceased. Others had fake green, or residency, cards and at least three are convicted felons who had been previously deported.
The previously deported criminal illegal immigrants had been convicted in U.S. courts with crimes ranging from possession of heroin to identity theft and possession of counterfeit alien registration documents.
Immigration authorities launched an investigation into the plant a few months ago when a check of employee records pointed that only 48 of the nearly 600 plant workers had valid Social Security numbers. Because the plant staff varies according to seasonal employment changes, only 165 illegal aliens were arrested in this weeks raid.
Portland Mayor Tom Potter was outraged by the immigration raid, saying that it is bad policy for federal officials to go after local workers who are in his city to support their families while filling the demands of local businesses. He immediately issued a written statement expressing his anger and referring to the illegal immigrants as Portland residents.
LOL!!
That starts a revolving door of once a citizen, they will demand the wages most of us require (or they will stay in the welfare system) which will start another round of requirements for low-wage workers.
If they are going to work here doing seasonal or low-wage work as “Guests”, I sure don’t want them exploited by employers who are already exploiting us. When they retire, will they return to their country of origin and live like poshas? I think not. This is not a good way to run a country. No way, no how.
The fact that some Americans seize upon a certain ethnicity or a certain form of breaking the law still doesn’t make the case for this being a not being a raw deal all the way around, and it doesn’t keep me from seeing down the line to where this will lead. I’d rather send aid directly to each illegal in their country of origin. It would be infinitely cheaper and we could all settle down.
Never? Part of the amnesty bill would grant these people credit for all those payments. They would then be immediately eligible for medicare and social security disability. They could then stop working and draw disability checks until they are 65 then regular social security for the rest of their lives.
And is anyone naive enough not to think that anyone who is willing to steal a social security card to obtain illegal employment is not going to fake an injury or disease in order to get social security disability?
Maybe I’m reading your post wrong, but it sounds like you were making the point somehow that they were helping to prop up SS. Am I wrong?
That’s how I meant it to read. Oops.
I agree with your post.
In addition, anyone who retires at age 62 is limited to how much they can earn and still collect benefits. Someone reporting income subject to ss tax under a stolen number will reduce or eliminate benefits to whomever they stole the number from, if that person retired at age 62.
Anyone who thinks this is a little problem that could be corrected by a few phone calls to ss, is nuts and has never dealt with a gov agency.
I understand that very well, you claim that 1.5 million would be missing from taxes paid at a lower wage (illegals). I asked what would be collected from Americans that would be paid at a higher market wage. Guess you don’t remember the stories of Americans going to the Gulf area post Katrina for decent paying jobs only to be undercut and replaced by foreign, mostly illegal labor at near half the hourly rate.
who gave Illegal Immigrants those SS# Pelosi or Reid?
Propping one fraud (Social Security) up with another fraud (identity theft) and then rationalizing it as all good ... some conservative you are. You approve of corruption, you are corrupt.
“The employer witholds SS taxes.”
You have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve owned a construction company since 1971. There are thousands, upon thousands of illegals who don’t contribute a dime. The people I compete against pay UNDER the table and I don’t mind telling you it’s getting almost impossible to compete.
How’s it done? Simple. Pay a savvy and legal Mexican say, 150,000 a year for a menial job and get him to get all his hundreds of Mexican cousins to come in and work for HIM. HE pays his cousins.
Add to that the mafia owned companies who pay everyone in cash out of a suitcase on Friday and you have one big mess.
Ahahahahahahahahahaha HA! You're into dark humor, aren't you?
“They claim 10 deductions, have nothing or almost nothing taken out.”
Looks like the GAO thinks that keeping track of folks using the
10 (or more?)
withholding allowances on their W-4s to zero out their Federal (and state?)
withholding is just a waste of time.
What a tangled web is woven once we got an IRS!
Thanks, Radar........now I have ammunition : )
BUMP
Another good point of many reasons why identity theft is a bad thing!
That’s simply not true. Most people I have engaged say exactly that. But a guest worker should not be able to take advantage of our social systems an the only way to avoid that is for the employers to furnish proof of financial responsibility for guest workers medical emergencies, something that they have consistently refused to do. preferring to foist those expenses on us(the taxpayers)
