In all honesty, the worst thing about the Pine Barrens are the mosquitoes in the summer. And yes, as shown in the Sopranos, it is easy to get lost without a compass, but that is true in any forest. Its actually a pleasent place to go canoeing, fishing or hunting. Don't want to be there during a drought (brush fires) or when Chris and Paulie are running around looking for Russians.

BTW: Us amateur students of film know that many of the shots in the "Pine Barrens" episode were taken directly from the conclusion of Bertollucci's "The Conformist", a film which is NOT OUT ON DVD, along with the rest of Bernardo's 70s output (the good stuff).

Funny thing, when I saw the Pine Barrens episode I'm thinking to myself, "Uh, that's not the pine barrens", it looked very much like my area of the state. So I looked it up online and I was right, well sorta. It was filmed in Harriman State Park NY which is part of the same general "mountain" range my house is in and about 10-12 miles away via crow flies.

I never got lost in the Pines but I was set in sugar sand a few times. Talking about the mob and the pines, read some of Beck’s books. He found human scalps in the pines from gangland wars in the 1930’s. He also said he found other “evidence” but didn't specify.
