Gen. Peter Pace -- the first Marine Corps officer to serve as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- is being precipitously let go.
In a surprise announcement last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that Pace wouldn't be renominated to a second term. In his place, Adm. Mike Mullen, current chief of naval operations, would take over when Pace's term expires Sept. 30.
As the highly qualified, deeply respected Pace is being ushered out the door, it is reasonable to wonder why.

He was too hard core for this administration. He wanted to actually fight a real war and wasn’t the average political careerist. Now we have a Navy ADMIRAL in charge of a dominately ground war. Makes a whole lot of sense. We have lost this one folks.
He was let go, becasue he had balls and gumption.....

Am I the only person who finds it ironic that while the majority of fighting going on in Afghanistan and Iraq are being fought by the Army and Marines, of the 9 top military combat commands they only have 3 posts?
bingo. Isn’t it also ironic that we are still sending troops into buildings occupied by hardcore al-qaeda thugs when we could just call in a b-52 strike and level the rat nest? Instead we have to risk troops going into the most dangerous combat; urban environment instead of allowing a bombing run, or a TOW or heavy barrage of anti tank rounds into the building. That would be a problem it might piss off the already pissed off locals. This war is being fought on the PC side and always has been. We need to either start supporting one clan,sect, tribe, or religious group and hope they some what like us, or we need to just level the entire place and get out. Something needs to be done.
Because that cowardly scumbag Bush is already assisting the Hillary campaign with the transition.
Sen. Clinton has a way of getting senior men of both parties to do her work for her. Pre-emptive removal of Gen. Pace excuses candidate Clinton of the responsibility to vote for or against re-confirmation. As a bonus, Hillary and other feminist senators get to vote for a liberal admiral, CNO Mike Mullen, an ardent advocate of “diversity” quotas and other controversial goals for the military.
It has long appeared that Bush is doing everything within his power to pave the way for a Hillary Presidency. Those new bosom buddies Poppy and the Slickster are undoubtedly pleased.
I proudly voted for Bush twice, and right now I feel so betrayed I throw up in my mouth a little every time I see his face. I better take a ‘time out’ now....
I was a non-academy fast-tracker in the late 60’s — 0-6 early and Personal aide to CNO after an arduous SEA tour.
Adm. Hyland (CincPacFlt) brought me to Pearl in ‘70 to to do some sensitive project work for him (as 35), but Hyland was soon fired (as an Admiral Tom Moorer man) by the new CNO (Zumwalt) as soon as Moorer was kicked upstairs to CJCS.
Zumwalt fired Johnny Hyland as CincPacFlt — and replaced him — a highly decorated WW-2 Naval Aviator — with Adm. Chick Clarey — a submariner.
So, we had a submariner managing Navy assets in an intensely challenging Air War in SouthEast Asia (Tonkin Gulf). Ludicrous in the extreme!
I looked around at the havoc — put in my papers and tossed three stars out the window — retiring at first opportunity in ‘74. (Incidentally, the pay scales were so low in those days, I quadrupled my income the minute I retired and took a private sector job.)
The good news for General Pace is that he will be sitting on three or four corporate boards in a year or two — and this period will seem nothing more than a bad dream!
I wake most mornings hoping it’s all been a bad dream, but alas the first thing I hear on news is how many brave fighting men and women have given their lives fighting a politically correct war and how the President has reached across the aisle again in a bipartisan move that will come to haunt us for sure.
The only hope I have at this point is that he will become so much a burden on the conservative cause that when a real conservative, like Fred Thompson, comes along there will be a rush to embrace him and save our country, and my sanity I might add.
Waiting for the next Bush betrayal is like having a car that won’t run sitting in the driveway. When someone points out it has no tires you point out what nice lines it has. When they mention the lack of a steering wheel you point out what a nice pattern there is on the upholstery. When they point out the hood is charred and there’s obviously been an engine fire you remind them of what a great vacation you took in that car the second year you had it. All in all it reminds me of the Gipper’s joke with the punch line “Well sir, you don’t kill a pig like that all at once!”
It’s time for some of the party faithful to make a trip to the White House and tell the president in no uncertain terms that he needs help. Help in getting back on track and help to keep his shrinking core of supporters from deciding that even Hillary is looking good. At least with her you could understand why she would do some of the things she would do, after all she’s a liberal.
There is one reason (as of now) that I will vote in 2008-and that is to vote against that duplicitous little clinton butt-kissing prick dick lugar.
Luckily, the JCS is not incharge of fighting wars. That is left to the Combatant Commanders. what it means is that the pace of Rummy’s transformation will slow or even be reversed.
Incorrect. The Chair of the JCS only has command over his staff. His role is that of an advisor to the President and the SecDef only. He has no command authority over combatant forces.
Yeah, we now have a dangerous President, he has either gone mad or has revealed his true self, his true stratergy.
Watch as this Administration and the State Dept rush to give the Internationalist, UN, Global Left everything they want, he will gladly push the International treaties like LOST, ICC...etal. The Conservative COre is all that stands between this...we have become the enemy in our own country.
I’ve noticed in recent weeks, the Bush defenders have become fewer and fewer. After the last election and Rummy was fired, I came on FR with a rant. A day or so later, I recanted. But now, I just don’t know. I can’t defend him anymore, not when he refuses to defend himself or America. I am afraid this country will suffer a terrible upheavel in the next 10 or 20 years. We have survived events like this in the past but that was before the nuke age. The only good thing I see happening - for me that is - is that I am becoming more attuned with God and Christianity.
I understand that he pleaded with Kennedy to mine Vietnam's harbors back in '63. He said that if it had been done at the time it would have made a big difference.
