Senate Republicans Work $4.4 Billion Border Security Amendment
Fox News ^ | June 12, 2007

Posted on 06/12/2007 8:07:24 PM PDT by 3AngelaD

GOP negotiators of an immigration reform bill are crafting a large border security amendment with mandatory, immediate funding that they hope will assuage concerns of both Republicans and Democrats, FOX News has learned. The senators are looking at a way to please conservatives who are skeptical Congress will ever fund the bill's border security provisions, as well as keep Democratic negotiators on board in a last ditch effort to save the comprehensive reform bill....

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a principle author of the amendment with Republican Sens. Jon Kyl and Mel Martinez, says his amendment is designed to be "a confidence builder" to address members' concerns that ramped up border security provisions in the bill won't, in the end, get funded. Graham hopes to provide $4.4 billion the day the bill is signed, through an estimate in fees and fines in the current immigration bill, to be used to beef up all the border security measures in the bill, with an additional $800 million for further measures, taking from measures put forward last year by New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg who called for more investment in capital infrastructure, like unmanned aerial vehicles and new Coast Guard boats.

Graham said this $4.4 billion would be borrowed from the Treasury and repaid once the fines and fees from the bill are collected, like the $5,000 fine each illegal has to pay for a work visa, called a "Z visa." Graham said it would be better to do it this way, rather than an emergency funding bill, which goes directly to increasing the deficit...

This is how they plan to cram the immigration bill down our throats. But it is a BIG LIE. They cannot appropriate money in this kind of bill. They need to pass a separate bill, and they need help of the House to to that. All they can do in this bill is to say is, "We think it would be nice if...." And what's more, there is no way they can guarantee this amendment will end up in the final bill. This is a trap that Kennedy is waiting to spring.

If they want to "build confidence," how's about ENFORCING THE DAMN LAWS THAT ARE ON THE BOOKS, BUILD THE FENCE, and round up everyone the IRS knows who's using fake SS numbers, and enforce the workplace rules so people can't hire illegal aliens.

They are negotiating with themselves. They sucker everyone into voting yes on another cloture vote so they can bring it to the floor, with NO GUARANTEE that any of their "reassuring" amendments will even pass.

NO!

Border security first. Enforce employment laws second.

Then, about three years hence, we'll talk about...

Third, resolve the status of remaining illegals...WITHOUT AMNESTY.

These fools propose giving 4.4 billion to an administration that has refused to uphold existing laws? Let’s get a new administration, uphold existing laws then talk about more money. Anyone supporting this monstrosity of a bill should be kicked out of office as soon as possible.

Silly boys. If this is all they got, they're as dumb as it seems. Enforcement problems are but one of the deal-breakers to Americans.

Americans don't want confidence something will be funded, Americans want to see enforcement happening to the extent that illegals are discouraged from staying or even coming illegally in the first place.

Take away the freebies I PAY FOR boys. We just are NOT going to trust you. End.

Graham is a liar. The Senate reminds me of a gas station toilet. We need a “courtesy flush”.

Ooohhh, so they spend more of our money and we are supposed to believe they’ll enforce our laws as they prove they won’t by selling us outfor %5000 a head.

GO TO HELL RINO’S! Your pork doesn’t mean a damn thing.

I hope Chambliss, Linds, Hagel and the rest enjoy the unemployment lie next year.

“Then, about three years hence, we’ll talk about...”

Essentially Graham is admitting, or discovering himself now, that the “triggers” ruse was a ruse.

This is just “triggers” with talk about funding so they can institute Z Visas “now.”

You were on a roll until you got to the IRS.

You should have said round up all IRS along with illegals and send them packing.

But you are spot on that this is a Sucker amendment.

Here is the only legislation that comes close to what the Senate should pass:

They CANNOT, under the Constitution, give the $4.4 billion to anyone. IT HAS TO BE APPROPRIATED in a separate bill. This is another attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the voters.

My answer is still no. We have a law to be enforced. Nothing needs be added. Add the billions to enforce what we have.

I believe these people like I a believe an alcoholic when he pleads for just one more chance. After decades of lies and deceit from him, thousands of broken promises to quit drinking and beating the wife or girlfriend.

They will say anything they believe you want to hear.

Does anyone see Sessions or Jim DeMint falling for this ruse? It smacks of desperation because that’s what it is.

Yep, this is a SMOKE SCREEN!

Money has already been appropriated for the fence, but the executive branch has not bothered to spend it.

Don't be fooled people, with the limited raids on illegals, and this bogus amendment. It's all meant to make you look at one hand while the other is doing other things. The old magicians sleight of hand trick.

Keep hammering them, hold their feet to the fire on ENFORCING EXISTING LAWS!!
