Note the soft-pedaling language of this piece. He "struck" the people while he "drove a vehicle on campus"...
Note the reality. He took his jeep off the road and drove it at high speed through a popular pedestrian plaza with the intent of killing as many people as possible.

As this was a case of SJS, I expect the courts to release him immediately.

Note how the article implies that Mohammed Taheri-azar actually said these things, when in fact it is quoting extensively from a letter written to the judge.
Anybody who thinks Mohammed Taheri-azar actually wrote that letter might be interested in buying a time-share of the Brooklyn Bridge.

I sincerely regret what I did on that day. Please release me from state custody so that I may pursue my goal of living a productive life in California. Well, he said he was sorry. What more do you people want?

I only have 1 question:
Was he charged with a hate crime?

Lame. Throw the book at him.
To: jebeier
If, as his public defender claims, he “has a severe mental illness” that makes him prone to driving vehicles through crowds of people, he belongs in a secure psych hospital, not running around free. And the idea of this guy working in a construction business is way scary. Lots of heavy machinery, often explosives available, lots of opportunity to sabotage the structural integrity of a building . . .
To: jebeier
Taheri-Azar, 23, said he hopes to work for his father's general contracting company in Anaheim, Calif., and "re-establish myself as a good, caring and productive member of society." Poor guy...I think he should be released to work with dear old dad just as soon as he completes a 40 or 50 year sentence.

Glad you’re sorry, now rot your life away for a few decades, and I’ll maybe believe a word out of your lying mouth.

This is known as “taqqiyah” in Arabic: Basically it is lying to infidels while in pursuit of ‘jihad’. This is considered not only allowable, but it is encouraged.
He, obviously, means none of what he professes in the letter and, when released, will continue his hateful ways just as many of the released Gitmo illegal combatants have.
His true nature was displayed in the courtroom and at the crime scene.
