Military F-16 jets forced a small plane to land at a Clay County airport Monday night after an air traffic controller reported the pilot had made suspicious comments.
FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said multiple jets intercepted the plane, which was being flown from Oklahoma, and escorted it to Clay County Regional Airport near Excelsior Springs, where agents interviewed the pilot.
Lanza said the FBI had received information that the pilot had made a statement that would lead one to conclude the plane, which was en route to Kansas City, had been taken over. He said the pilot then stopped communicating.
Investigators determined that there had been a misunderstanding between the pilot and air traffic controller, Lanza said. The pilot was released and will not be charged, he said.
