Reminds me of a guy on my first boat—his theory is that after midnight, ATM’s should have breathalyzers attached and if you were too drunk, it wouldn’t give you money, but rather give you coupons for food.

Let me know how it is! I got it from a friend who said it is wonderful, but here I am 6-7 months later and I still haven’t tried it.

I am not a vegetarian, but in my experience, the enjoyable vegetarian dishes are the ones are the ones that are vegetarian from the ground up. If you take a recipe that was originally carnivore and swap in a meat substitute, it’s a pale imitation. Veggieburgers, tofurkey, soy bacon, no thanks.

When I was in college, I knew a lot of recent vegetarians who were pasty and wan — because they stopped eating meat and made no other changes. They would go to Burger King and get fries and a Coke. Going veg isn’t a simple matter of cutting out meat — you need another source of protein. Beans are an excellent choice.

I hate to recommend PETA for anything, but in the narrow area of culinary advice, they have some recipes. There are also a lot of vegetarian Indian recipes that are delicious.

Yummmmm.

Maybe I’ll make a late-night stop at Denny’s this weekend.

many Southerners omit the "h" in the word "shrimp", pronouncing it "srimp"

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

I went to a Waffle House once, cold sober and in broad daylight. It felt wrong.

He also said never mess with Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. :-)

Does anyone really need to be told that? I mean, we're talking about the men who, a few years back, invaded Spain accidentally. If someone hadn't checked the map, they could have taken Madrid.

(Background -- a Royal Marine exercise went awry a while back. They were supposed to storm Gibraltar, but landed on the Spanish coast. A beach full of saggy-breasted topless women and fat men in weenie-bikinis were all, like, ¿Que?)

I think it would be better if it hailed a taxi.

“vegetarian” - an old Indian word meaning “bad hunter” ;)

If you’re on a budget, like this senior citizen is, 3am at Denny’s is a great place to pig out for little more than a cup of coffee.

Many of the “after bar closes crowd” stagger into Denny’s, order huge meals and don’t touch a thing on their plates.

Careful use of a newspaper placed over their meal as they sit there totally crocked and/or passed out usually guarantees a great untouched meal for nothing or a cup of coffee at the most. I’ve been eating diner at Denny’s for 30 years now.

Cafe Du Monde! Now your are talking. Wear a white shirt so the powdered sugar doesn’t show!

Then it’s across the street to Central Grocery for a Muffelata!

Damn it, now you're making my mouth water. I thought I'd had a muffaletta before, but when I went to the Central Grocery, OMFG. You should fill out a form before eating that thing, just so they know whom to call if you faint from sheer bliss. I haven't been back since Katrina, but I can still taste it.

(Sigh)

I think I have a destination for my next road trip.

Why did some sadistic sucker resurrect this thread at the tail end of a month I’ve been fasting through?
