If you don’t think it exists, nothing I say will convince you otherwise. People don’t hear what they refuse to hear.

The Harry Potter books are not “children's books”. They are studies in the occult.

Only in your fervid imagination.

We got “Sorcerer’s Stone” on audiotape from the library, and are listening to it as we do errands. I want to re-read OOTP, but first I’ll have to find the box in which I packed it! Clare and I have ordered our British versions, and we’ll pre-order two American versions from Border’s so she and Joseph can each have one for their collections.

I only have one copy of Deathly Hallows on order at B&N.... perhaps it should be two, or maybe my poor husband can just suffer until I’ve finished.

I hope they didn’t screw it up too badly in the screen adaptation

The trailers I've seen look pretty good!

Instead, she chose to teach children the wrong lesson.

I don't know about that. Teaching the children about standing firm on your principles seems to be a good lesson to me (whether you agree with the principles or not).

Our 19 yr. old daughter read the Dark Materials trilogy while in early high school. She was the one who told me they were very anti-Christian, but she thought they were interesting stories, nonetheless. She's looking forward to seeing the movie adaptation of The Golden Compass

YMMV, The few witches I personally know are pretty good people. OTOH, I avoid evil people regardless of what their asserted faith may be.

I doubt with 100% confidence that nobody posting on this thread has ever personally witnessed witchcraft

Welllllll... Not successful witchcraft...

*snort* Bodice rippers; now there’s a genre that I just cannot stand! I’d rather spend my time on a Tom Clancy, JohnLe Carre, or Ellis Peters, for that matter (I think there is a new ‘Brother Cadfael’ novel I haven’t read!)

That they do.

Still, They should have cast Barbara Mikulski

as Umbridge...

Don't ask how I got a picture of her next to Fudge at the Wizengamot.

Just don't...

When the books came out, we started getting them for Clare. Joseph didn't get interested until the third book was coming out because he'd seen the first two movies. One Christmas I got him the set of the first four in paperback. Then I got Clare the British set for Christmas and because of the printing snafu, got the extra set, so I kept the messed up one since it cost as much to send it back as it would have to just keep it. So that's why I've ordered British versions for her and me, to finish off our collections.

We get the American ones because there is a delay in receiving the British ones, and we want to read them as soon as we can! ;o) We'll probably go to the midnight party at Border's again; Clare enjoys seeing her friends there.

We should never teach children about the Greeks either. That mythology could make them think they might run into Hercules or something.

Oh, what I would give to run into Hercules.

Or, better yet, Ares.

I meant I have a mage and sorcerer in my story. I don’t want it to sound like I keep them hidden in my closet or anything.

Riiiiiight. In the story. Sure they are. ;)

I agree with what your daughter says. I took a course this spring in Young Adult Literature and had to read 20 books. I tried my best to avoid all the downer and anti-Christian books, but it was hard. We had to choose from a list of books nominated in all kinds of best books categories. I chose The Amber Spyglass from a list and then discovered that it was the third of a trilogy. I’ve read the first two and want to read the Amber Spyglass soon. They are interesting and well written. But they are sooo dark. Pullman hates CS Lewis and does everything he can to be an anti-Lewis. It depends on the child. I wouldn’t want my daughter reading them because she’s a little too interested in these dark things. They’re fine for others. I will probably see the movie too.

I don’t doubt what you say. They’re ignorant and don’t realize what they’re dabbling in. It’s real and it’s evil.

Honestly, I’m not sure you’d like the Outlander series. They are great reading, well-plotted and with believable (and likable) characters and dialogue, and I love them myself, but I can see where men might not.

No slam on men, you understand . . . they just don’t strike me as “man” books, since at heart they are a huge romance novel.
