Uproar over surgeon general nominee

WASHINGTON — President Bush's nominee for surgeon general ran into intensified opposition Friday, as two leading Democratic presidential candidates joined major gay and lesbian groups in urging his rejection by the Senate.

Dr. James W. Holsinger Jr., 68, a prominent cardiologist and former state health director in Kentucky, was nominated by Bush last month with a mandate to fight childhood obesity.

But controversy has erupted over a paper Holsinger wrote 16 years ago on human anatomy and homosexuality, as well as his role in church battles over policies toward gays. The furor may pose an insurmountable obstacle to his confirmation.

The paper, written as part of a debate within the United Methodist Church over its stance on homosexuality, suggested gay sex was unnatural.

Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, both vying for the Democratic presidential nomination, announced opposition to his appointment.

Holsinger is "a nominee who will divide America," Edwards said, castigating what he termed the doctor's "anti-gay writings and beliefs."

I did some googling on Holsinger and the homosexual argument against his paper seems to be that hets do it, too.

It looks like an uphill battle for confirmation.

I wonder if the president will throw him under the bus like he did to Gen. Pace?

Makes sense to anyone with more than a brain stem.

BARF ALERT *** technical description and opinion follows ***

I'd refer to it as "exceeding design tolerances". The human rectum simply isn't designed for that type of abuse. You can't procreate that way even if you manage to get the sexes right. The rectal cavity is shredded under those circumstances, and there is no natural defense against the penetration of infectious "matter" into the blood stream.

And consider the function...Good grief! Only someone afflicted with a fecal fixation could fancy that. Think "Taco Bell"...It just doesn't make sense. Yuck...

To each their own I suppose. I don't want to know about it and to have it designated as a sexual preference to me is akin to open harassment.

The scientific, medical, and death rate statistics show overwhelming evidence that homosexuality is unnatural. Why would any administration cave in to morons or people with disordered minds on a matter so clearly obvious? ...sad, indeed, a pity actually...

I thought that Democrats were already ex-officio members.

I’m guessing Bush didn’t know about this in advance. I’m guessing Bush is scrambling right now for a way out of this. He’s pandered to every other leftist group in America (with the notable and laudable exception of the anti-war schmucks) and I can’t imagine him not being all in a dither for a way to pander to the gays.

...”It looks like an uphill battle for confirmation”...

Yes, expertise has no meaning in this society anymore. The politicians have to check with the gay community on everything. Whatever they say, goes. The truth is that homosexuality was declared a disorder in the psychiatric handbook, the DSM, years ago and medical professionals in training at that time where taught that. This nominee was probably graduating from medical school during the time when the DSM-II was the source of information for physicians and I think that edition contained little empirical date about psychiatric disorders. The DSM has been revolutionized since then and I am sure physicians have revolutionized along with it, including this nominee. Free nations must protect their minorities but to turn democracy on it’s head and to always cater to the minority view is to write a prescription for disaster and great future unrest.

Holsinger is "a nominee who will divide America," Edwards said, castigating what he termed the doctor's "anti-gay writings and beliefs."

...And this should scare people? I want America divided if it means those who LIE about what's good, and those who stand for what's right. It's shameful how we've let 2% of the population get so much influence pushing deviant, perverted behavior!

What is wrong with the good-hearted men of this country?

... although I agree it would have been nasty, I guess I lose a little respect for a guy who runs from a fight in a good cause.
