WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Friday he has recommended Adm. Mike Mullen, currently chief of naval operations, to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Gates said that Mullen has the "vision strategic insight and integrity to lead America's armed forces."
If formally appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the Senate, Mullen would replace Marine Gen. Peter Pace as the nation's top military officer.
GO NAVY!
At those levels . . . they must all be NWO compliant anyway.
Sigh.
Thankfully, he’s Navy, though! GO NAVY!

Pace has been in his post for six years a period that covers the Iraq war. Gates said that until recently, he had intended to renominate the Marine general for another two years.
But he said that after consulting with senators in both parties, he had concluded that “the focus of his confirmation process would have been on the past and not on the future.”

The second top brass position going to NAVY. I wonder whether it’s linked to the Persian Gulf/Iran... although Adm. Fallon made rather appeasing remarks regarding Iran.

I was hoping that he had something more to do with getting the missile defense program going on or managing it. Not true. I’m sure he’s a good manager ... but this writeup doesn’t excite me.
Thank you for that great news! Sure glad to see someone that understands air operations that is going to be back in charge.
Sad, I like Gen. Pace. He is a childhood friend of my girlfriend.

Huh?
He’s been on the Chiefs of Staff for years.
The word is "tapped".
Pace must have actually wanted to kill Iraqis. But that would anger the Arab Street, and we can’t have that.

article Update..
WASHINGTON - Switching course, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Friday he has recommended Adm. Mike Mullen, currently chief of naval operations, to replace Gen. Peter Pace as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Gates said he had originally intended to seek another two-year term for Pace, but concluded that would have resulted in a divisive Senate confirmation focusing on the Iraq War.
“It would be a backward looking and very contentious process,” Gates said at a Pentagon news conference.
Pace has been either chairman or vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs for the past six years a period that covers the Iraq war.
But he said that after consulting with senators in both parties, he had concluded that “the focus of his conformation process would have been on the past and not on the future.”
Gates said that Mullen has the “vision strategic insight and integrity to lead America’s armed forces.”
At the same time, he conceded he wished “it were not necessary to make a decision like this.”
As chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for two years, and vice chairman for the previous four, Pace has been involved in all of the key decisions leading to the invasion of Iraq, and the planning for the post- Saddam Hussein era.
The war, now in its fifth year, has claimed the lives of more than 3,500 U.S. troops, and has become intensely unpopular with the public.

I like this. The navy is always forwardly deployed. I just wish it was bigger.
I wonder if the Paris Hilton story will still appear at the top of newscasts tonight...and not this story.
This is unlikely to merit even a blip on the dinosaur “news” media.
It really makes sense to relace a Marine general with a Navy admiral where we are fighting mainly land and air wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How crazy can things get?
I’m surprised the Rats didn’t insist on the head of the Peace Corp. being named.
“Mullen tabbed to head Chiefs of Staff”
I kind of like General Pittard myself, but only because I served under him when he was but a little ole’ light bird.
I came in contact with General Pace prior to his ascension to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. From that contact, which was work related, I developed some concerns about him as a leader. I felt he placed his personal ambition ahead of doing what was right. This is obviously one man’s subjective opinion. I’m sure others would say there were mitigating circumstances of which I was unaware. I am not sorry to see him leave so important a post. I hope his replacement is a selfless individual with the vision to guide our President and our military through what promises to be a decisive summer campaign.
Every branch of the service gets their turn at this job, sooner or later. A four start commander is supposed to be qualified to manage and command forces of all four branches, no matter which branch he is in.
