Major Garrett has sources on both sides of the aisle telling him we can write the bill's obituary. Roll call going on now.

Hey Larry -

I'm sure some slow reading Southern folk would love to know what you think of their families.

Technically, they were traitors. Honorable intentions, but traitors just the same.

Make sure you talk real slow for us in the next interview - use small words, too.

To the “Ohio” Yankee:

I don’t know WHO you are, but I certainly know WHAT you are.
My ancestors were not traitors. Not in a technical sense or otherwise. The history I was taught, says that Southerners had a different idea of what citizenship was, prior to the “late unpleasantness”. My forebearers, as well as Robert E. Lee and others were loyal to their homes. They would have been a traitor, to turn against their own people.
You should really watch your “phraesology” when you are talking about Southerners. People I know have been apt to “open a can of whup*ss” for MUCH less.

We need to put this bill in the trunk of a 68 Oldsmobile and let Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci have at it like in “Goodfellas.”

You may be right. But let him publicly admit said mistake, and promise not to sin again. That way lies forgiveness. And no other. This one issue trumps all others for me, including WOT, abortion, judges. Why? Because if we lose on this one, we will lose on all the others.

There is no way around the fact that ANY confederate was a traitor.

"If you bring these [Confederate] leaders to trial it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution secession is not rebellion. Lincoln wanted Davis to escape, and he was right. His capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one." -- Salmon P. Chase, SCOTUS Chief Justice, 1865 *

*Shelby Foote, The Civil War,Vol. 3, p. 726

"[Jefferson] Davis will not be found guilty and we shall stand there completely beaten." -- Justice Frances Lieber, retained by the Johnson administration to pursue treason charges against Davis. (Foote, Vol. 3)

Agree that he should admit he was wrong. But in theory, we could survive 20-30 years of “open borders.” We won’t survive 10 of al-quaeda if they get bombs. So WoT is by far #1 to me.

Just to be clear, Chase was a DEMOCRAT whom the generous Lincoln put in as SecTreas, then SCOTUS. Try finding a similar quotation from Thaddeus Stevens or Charles Sumner. Now, it was appropriate that Lincoln gave them amnesty (uh oh, bad word). But that presumes a law has first been broken, which it was.

And for the record, while Foote is a great historian---probably one of the best CW historians---he is a southerner.

Just to be clear, Chase was a DEMOCRAT...

Clarity apparently being a desirable thing, let's further specify that Chase was from New Hampshire, and, later, Ohio. Judge Lieber, who you conspicuously declined to mention, was head of the Loyal Publication Society of New York.

I doubt it's a revelation to anyone that Foote was a Southerner. Apparently only Northern historians who refrain from publishing quotes that contradict your viewpoint are above suspicion.

“I did, and I do. Technically, they were traitors. Honorable intentions, but traitors just the same.”

So sure are you of Generals Lee and Jackson? You’re just wrong. But never mind that. We still will accept immigrants from OHIO here in the South.

...and there are pletny of them because ya’ll crap in your own beds and then want to come down here and tell us that great AMERICANS like Lee and Jackson were somehow, through some yankee calculus, traitors.

Keep on writing, maybe you’ll get it right one day, but don’t quit your day job until you do.

Well, it might be more urgent, but I don’t think it’s as important. Not to downplay it’s importance, but we can lose in Iraq and survive, although the following years will be difficult.

With a vast population of people who have not subscribed to American values influencing the direction of the country, I don’t think we will survive.

That’s just the way I see it. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.

Anyway, Rudy and McCain are strong on the WOT, but not much else. Those that are good on other issues are also strong on the WOT, so why settle?

Finally, if the American people DO elect Hillary, or some other Dem, then perhaps our time has past.

I had more hopes for the next judge when there was a Republican majority in the Senate, even though it was a spineless RINO majority.

We got Alito only after a firestorm of dissent. With DEM extremists running the Senate I can’t see Bush putting forth a real constitutionalist with the battle that would ensue. Unfortunately we also have to face the possibility that the next President could be a Dem and that two openings could come in that term. Not a given of course, but a real enough possibility to be pretty scary. That’s another (of many) reason that it is critical to hold the White House next year. I’m concerned that Bush’s current pro-illegal push will alienate enough of our side into staying home and putting a Dem in the office.

I have not read Larry's book - never will. Ironic that a "patriot's guide" to anything considers men who protect their homes, families, and sovereignty traitors.

Does that fact Shelby Foote is from the South make his work any less accurate?

A neighbor, who happened to be a yankee, gave me a copy. No self respecting Southerner would buy it. Another ‘author’ whose ‘work’ has done real well as a doorstop...in the garage
