Major Garrett has sources on both sides of the aisle telling him we can write the bill's obituary. Roll call going on now.

Listening to the Majority and Minority Leaders, it sounds like they want to bring this turkey up again. It scares the living H___ out of me that they are saying they are ‘very close’.

So starting tomorrow, we need to renew the calls to our Senators...to keep this horrible thing dead.

I would love to celebrate...but listening CSPAN2 does not make me at all confident that they won’t try to sneak this through later.

kyl is disappointing ...Graham & McLame? expected...Goober is pathetic. I'd love the SC GOP to find a decent candidate to run against him and get him out of there...

McConnell urging Reid not to give up so easily. Give it a couple more days...

I wish McConnell would shut the [F-word] up already! He keeps sounding like he wants to convince ol’ Harry not to pull this bill. McConnell needs to shut up and let this bill die!

Senator McConnell is going to screw around and talk Reid into going on with the bill!

Why doesn't McConnell just let this beast die already...?

They’re all saying how really sorry they are that they couldn’t reach an agreement on this bill. That’s a lie, of course. They are all just thankful to be out of the crossfire.

A “mistake” would be voting for McCain/feingold, the terrorist rights bill, prescription drugs expansion. Not something that cannot be reversed and would destroy this country, the conservative movement, and even the party he claims to be part of.

Nor do I think Kyl believes he made a “mistake”. If he does, then have the guts to admit it like reagan did.

Knowing what we know of this president, he probably will.

He'll try, but he won't succeed. The anti-amnesty conservatives he insulted with his remarks aren't going to forgive him any time soon.

President as unpopular as Bush doesn't have much leverage, even with members of his own party. He's as lame a duck as there ever was.

I'd say there's a 99% chance this thing is dead for at least 2 years. But if the Dems do well in '08, or if McCain or Gulliani win, watch out. That's why it's so important that we nominate someone who is a)solid on this issue and b) can win.

Even my Liberal Senator McCaskill from MO. voted NO.

The low grade moron voted no because he values his job!

We have to keep the pressure on them to build that damned wall/fence!

We have to keep pounding on them to enforce the LAW!

Reid calling the seven RINOs who voted for cloture courageous. I, 50mm, call them unre-electable.

McConnell reminds Reid of the 12 sane Dems who voted against cloture.

Swimmer up now! Looks drunk!

Well, wrong. Kyl has been one of the most reliable people in the senate for years. And there are Freepers here who hold the first three things you listed right on the same plateau as this. For some Freepers, anything short of 100% on “their” issues is equal to treason. Silly.

Why is the "no" vote for cloture being taken as an indication of the bill dying?

Because it's very unlikely Reid is going to want to bring it up again. He sees it's unlikely there will ever be a compromise that will garner 60 votes, and so he sees no reason to continue.

You're right, it's not dead, but there's very little chance it will come back, at least not until '09. If the dems do well in '08, or if McCain or Rudy win, watch out. Then I don't think this thing can be stopped.

Conservatives had huge odds against them. They had the President against them, the RINOs against them and the Democrats against them. Tonight's development is even bigger than what transpired in the Harriet Miers case: it gave us confidence that nothing in America is inevitable. Good people need to rise up and take a stand. We saved the Republican Party and the country. Our job is not finished. We still need to vote the Open Borders advocates out of office so nothing like this ever happens again. We must make sure those who serve our country put us first. Now let's roll!!!
