Why is the "no" vote for cloture being taken as an indication of the bill dying?

Because it's very unlikely Reid is going to want to bring it up again. He sees it's unlikely there will ever be a compromise that will garner 60 votes, and so he sees no reason to continue.

You're right, it's not dead, but there's very little chance it will come back, at least not until '09. If the dems do well in '08, or if McCain or Rudy win, watch out. Then I don't think this thing can be stopped.

I agree. We need to vote out those who betrayed this country or this will have been a pyrhhic victory. What we have witnessed is the incredible selfishness and arrogance of our Senators. We have to ask ourselves if we want to be represented by people like them. I think we can find far better people to serve us there who will put their country's welfare first. We've got a big job ahead of us and a short time to do it. Let's begin by sending the traitors in our party packing. That's the only way the lesson will be learned for good. And something permanent can emerge out of this disgraceful farce.
