Punch flies on [Alabama] Senate floor

State Sen. Charles Bishop hit Sen. Lowell Barron on the floor of the Senate this afternoon.

The Senate was in recess when Bishop, a Republican from Arley, and Barron, a Democrat from Fyffe, started an animated conversation. Bishop suddenly hit Barron in the face, and Barron fell back onto a desk.

Patrick Harris, assistant secretary of the Senate, said he saw Bishop hit Barron and quickly grabbed Bishop and pulled him back.

Bishop in an interview later said Barron called him a s...o...b, so he hit Barron in the face.

"If he calls me that again, it'll happen again," Bishop said.

Barron was not immediately available for comment.

Barron was not immediately available for comment.

He was probably putting a steak on his face/eye.

I wouldn’t go so far as to have him arrested. I think the punch in the face was sufficient.

I've often thought that the nation should take the park in Weehauken, NJ where Burr shot Hamilton and turn it into a national dueling ground for settling such disputes. I'm thinking of the time that Zell Miller called Chris Matthews out on his show for showing disrespect to Michelle Malkin. (Michelle is a charter member of the Puget Sound FReeper Chapter, so I'm a little protective of her.)

Maybe ABC Sports could televise the duels.

ABC wouldn’t know what to make of it. This has Pay Per View written all over it. If you’re going to go that route, Vince McMahon or Don King would be the only men alive up to the job.

Just carrying on a fine old tradition!

Jefferson Davis KO’d Henry Foote in the Mississippi senate back in the 1850s after Foote pulled a knife on him.

Absolutely moronic. The guy should be arrested.

Which one? The one who threw the punch or the one who didn't hit back?

That was quick. Second sentence. If the puncher was a Dem, no doubt they never would have mentioned the political affiliations of either of them.

Ummm....dragnet2, this incident happened in the ALABAMA Senate as opposed to US Senate.

I hope you do understand that there are some differences between both legislative bodies and what happens in one isn’t always connectd to the other.

For the record - Alabama’s US senators are the great Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. You can learn more about the US Senate at http://www.senate.gov/index.htm

"Maybe ABC Sports could televise the duels."

I would support that if:

They used the original Burr-Hamilton pistols,

and were required to dress in the garb of the day.

(and they filled the bullets with nitrous oxide.) ;>

Thanks. Similar to the blue/white Scottish flag.

Agreed. I shouldn’t be shocked that so many here think this is a good thing, but I am.

Ah, the cowardly Preston Brooks who sucker punched Sumner and continued to beat him while his pistol weilding friends kept others off of him. A hero for bullies and cowards everywhere.
