OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- An arrest has been made in the homicide investigation of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith.
Late Wednesday night, police said Edwin R. Hall, 26, of Olathe, was being held in the Johnson County Jail in connection with the slaying of Smith.
Law enforcement crews combing a large wooded area near Longview Lake Wednesday found a body believed to be missing teenager Kelsey Smith, who was abducted from an Overland Park Target store parking lot Saturday night.
Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said Smith's body was found about 1:30 p.m. across the state line near Grandview, Mo., about 20 miles east of the abduction site.
Positive identification was pending, but Douglass said volunteer searchers could stop their work. He did not say how the woman was slain, but KMBC reported that there were signs of trauma to the body.
"As I understand she was found at a wooded area, but I can't say whether she was directly concealed by bushes," Douglass told reporters during an afternoon news conference.

Nancy Grace on CNN? MSNBC, (whatever channel she’s on), was talking to some cops last night and they said Kelsey had had a website up on that MySpace.com, or whatever where teenagers gather. She may have revealed too much information, like what town she lived in, her last name, etc. Kids think they’re immortal, and those websites are haunted by truly evil predators.

I know! I was reading his wife’s page and was really struck by how much they’ve moved around. Bet there’s a reason!

I agree, I told my girls long ago to throw those keys as far as they could, even if he knocks you in the car try to drop them on the ground or throw them in the back seat. Anything! Just fight for time. Another thing that needs to be mentioned is for young women, and maybe older ones also, to be alert while shopping. Make a point of entering several stores or several different departments before you exit, not to shop, but to verify no one is following you. If you pay attention it is very easy to identify a stalker. DO NOT leave the safety of the mall or shopping center if you identify such, call the police and wait for an officer to show up. You might even catch one of these creeps and save some young woman’s life!
Again, I’m not trying to be a pest. I am looking for real answers here. Let’s say the guy was hiding behind a car near her. Her dad was a cop so I am assuming that she was taught to be aware. She doesn’t notice anything, is getting into her car (no reason for her to throw her keys away at this point) and the guy jumps out from behind her (she still wouldn’t see him) and shoves her from behind. She maybe had 2 seconds of awareness before he possibly knocked her out. She was in broad daylight! I guess I’m just not sure that there was anything she could have done to prevent this.
The guy they charged has a wife and little girl. No one suspected anything. It just makes my skin crawl.

Just as fastening a seat belt is not a guarantee of surviving a vehicle accident, so too exercising awareness will not defeat every attack.
As for the keys; if an attacker is forcing you into your car, it would be best that nobody be able to drive that car. It only takes a fraction of a second to toss the keys. It creates a significant burden on the attacker if the intention is to use the car.
The statistics of abduction seem to indicate quite clearly that there is virtually no price too high to pay in order to prevent being transported from the scene of the abduction. Anything bad that is going to happen will not be improved by allowing the attacker the freedom to choose the site for continuing the attack.
That makes sense with the keys. I guess I am just showing the lack of my ability to defend myself in an instance such as this. Maybe I’ll take a self defense class with my daughter. She’s still pretty young but it wouldn’t hurt to start.

BELTON, Mo. - Overland Park investigators said they were not ruling out a possible connection between the abduction and murder of Kelsey Smith and a missing teen from Cass County.
Kara Kopetsky, 17, was last seen on May 4th.
Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said they were investigating all possible angles of the case and would provide Belton Police with any necessary resources.
A web site has been launched to assist in efforts to find Kopetsky.

thanks for the ping. I have been on this for a few days now watching and it is so sad to see this beautiful child just taken like this. I hope they put to death the man who did this. He looks like one scary fella!
