WASHINGTON, June 1 (UPI) The U.S. Senate may consider making English the national language, not the common language included in immigration reform legislation.
The proposal from Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., would reduce the government services provided in languages other than English, the Washington Times reported Friday.
There is not an entitlement for language, other than the English language, to be given to people who want government services, Inhofe told the Times.
Many Democrats oppose the measure, which would lift President Bill Clinton's executive order encouraging government services to be delivered in different languages, and its fate as an amendment to the immigration bill was uncertain.
The immigration bill would require former illegal aliens to show they had applied to take an English class after four years with a visa. They would have to pass the English requirement on the citizenship exam before getting a green card.
But, do I still have to “Press 1 for English”?
Not good enough.
No ballots in any language other than English.
Yet, they also passed the Salazar amendment, which requires the government to provide “native language” documentation to Z-visa holders for Z-visa holders when they do things like apply for federal benefits.
If it becomes law, the bill will give Z-visas to millions of illegal immigrants making them legal. Under the Salazar amendment, they will have little incentive to learn English because they will be able to use their native language while doing business with the federal government.
Bait? What’s attached to it?
Agreed, the bill should be killed. More amendments being debated/voted on currently on CSPAN 2.
Forget trying to amend this POS. Instead torpedo it altogether.
Press 1 for English is a different issue, that is the freedom of businesses to operate as they see fit.. some companies (like the one I work with) have international customer bases.
That is fine. However, when I call the local power company, it is different.
Besides, I was just being a smart arse. Lack of coffee has that effect on me.
They will allow 30 languages into America and make all of us pay for printing all the forms in those languages.
Interesting, that would put them ahead of most public school teachers, news reporters, and Democratic voters.
I fart in the general direction of congress....
Yeah and we will pay for the English classes as we do now.
Excellent news.
If any more lipstick is applied to this dead pig, it will be mummified in grease.
The Salazar amendment, passed right after the Inhofe amendment, in effect cancels out the Inhofe amendment.
It was just a scam to give cover to these slime balls so the can say they voted to make English the official language (before they voted against making English the official language).
Press one for English
or press two to disconnect and call back after learning English.
