Like Reagan Without the New Ideas (Fred Thompson)
The New York Observer ^ | June 6, 2007 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 06/06/2007 7:56:22 PM PDT by Eric Blair 2084

Republican angst has created an opening for Fred Thompson.

As G.O.P. voters’ concern has turned to panic—hastened by the much-criticized immigration bill—they now recognize that the Bush Presidency may rank with Hoover’s and Carter’s, and that their 2008 Presidential pick will therefore have to offer not only competency but the promise of change.

Mr. Thompson will enter the race as the focus of many conservatives’ fixation to find an unblemished candidate. On the one hand, he seems to please many conservatives: no offense offered on social issues, sound foreign policy and soothing to the ears. However, it’s not clear that Mr. Thompson has either the experience or the ideas to rescue the G.O.P. from its current plight.

His “elder statesman” screen persona obscures the fact he is the most inexperienced of the major G.O.P. contenders, with seven dimly remembered years as U.S. Senator, no area of expertise, no executive experience and no major legislative achievements bearing his name.

Nor is it apparent—not yet, at least—that he is offering any original ideas to qualify him as the “change” candidate that Republican voters could sorely use.

Classic change candidates offer personal vision, new ideas, and the hope that business will not be conducted as usual if elected. Ronald Reagan in particular offered a new vision of conservative governance and redefined his party.

But Mr. Thompson’s public pronouncements to date offer little sign that he can define and lead the party in the post-Bush era. Bashing Fidel Castro, the U.N. and the President’s immigration proposal, however artfully done, are not terribly new in conservative Republican circles.

But Obama is OK with her, even though he has only one year as U.S. Senator, no area of expertise, no executive experience and no major legislative achievements bearing his name.

i found this article to have no new ideas, and nothing conservatives would be interested in

In the internet age these "journalists" conduct research by reading what you and others write on FR. Don't think for a second they didn't notice the Rudy supporter meldown here. They saw it. That's good. Power to the people who aren't the down and out proletariet.

Hopefully Fred's people (maybe there are some here on this very thread) will take this to heart and heed the warning. You can't win an election with a slogan of "Hey, I suck less than the other guys".

Lurch, aka John Kerry, tried that in 2004. "Vote for me, my name is not George Bush". I'm rooting for Fred (or you for that matter) to grab the bull by the horns and make history.

This is hot air with no substance to back it up.

Obviously Jennifer had a deadline to meet and decided that the path of least resistance was to read blogs at random, assemble a few remarks and call it work.

She failed to read the background on his brilliant legal analyses that would have enlightened her that Fred Thompson has an intellect that outshines all other candidates. His intellect is on par with Lincoln’s.

She failed to read his positions on social issues, positions that clearly show he understands the enormous challenges and perils facing the nation. He has not offered any details yet and he shouldn’t at this stage.

As far as his political philosophy, he is a federalist and was the same when he was Senator. Jennifer should have researched the bad legislation he stopped, that would have given her inkling of what federalism is all about. It’s about limited government and how the Constitution binds us.

Instead Jennifer is now able to talk in Manhattan cafes about her ‘work’ that includes exposes on FDT. Out here in the boonies of Seattle, this PhD would assign her an ‘F’ to her babbling...er...’work’.

LOL. You have to be kidding! Like that disqualified any recent contender for president.

... no executive experience and no major legislative achievements bearing his name.

This has to give Fred a leg up. I think of the atrocious legislation handed down by "conservative" legislators, and I think "why didn't you just sit there and shut up!"

The best Congresses are the ones that enact the fewest and most limited laws.

Reagan didn’t have a lot of “new ideas” either. Just back to common sense.

Panicking? I’m definitely tired of Bush, but I’m also very pleased with the current bunch of his potential replacements. Romney, Rudy, Thompson — I like them all and think any of them could defeat Hillary or Obama. I would be panicking if all we had waiting in the wings were, say, Bob Dole. But as it is: not panicking.

What I see is a lot of test messaging on the upcoming Fred Bash from the Dems; “Inexperienced, lazy, lightweight, Hollywood, unremarkable, 2 term, no heavy leg., no executive, etc.”

They are starting to be obsessed with taking him apart.(Have you seen Chris Matthews lately?) FDT is emerging as a viable alternative to Her Highness, and is fouling up the office decorator plans of a lot of prospective appointees.

Well, Jennifer Rubin is right.
But had she listened to Mr Thompson last night she would know that is exactly where he is heading with this campaign.

How many Fred pings are on FR? Thats the second one!

Everybody here is great. But we can’t carry the water for him. If Fred wants to be the most powerful man in world, he has to do it on his own.

Go for it Fred. This is your chance to become a legend in world history. It’s up to you.

Senator Thompson’s “seven dimly remembered years” were far more important than She Whose Name Cannot Be Mentioned’s 6 years and counting or Osama/Obama/That guy from Chicago’s two years in the Senate. Of course, SWNCBM does have an area of demonstrated expertise - voting in favor of every tax bill which comes up for vote. Osama’s area of expertise - I won’t mention it for fear of being banned. Executive experience? Osama - a bit fat zero. SWNCBM - sitting on her big fat (oops, potential ban) protecting her whore of a husband. Major legislative achievements, well, SWNCBM did..., well, she voted for but she tried to recant, she went to church with the dog, she... Osama, uhhhhhh, give me a minute...., give me another minute,...aw heck, call me tomorrow.

they now recognize that the Bush Presidency may rank with Hoover’s and Carter’s

Really, let us see how Bush Presidency compare to Hoover whose has the 1929 depression during his Presidency and Carter who resides over one of the worst economy ever and absolute weakness on the internal stage.

President Bush destroyed 2 terrorist regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, freed 50 million people. He is commanding the war in Iraq which is now the center front of the war on terror where our brave troops are killing and capturing the terrorists by the tens of thousands. He protected us since 9/11 and we did not have a terrorist attack in America since then.

President Bush cut our taxes which helped us out of recession, the Clinton recession, and thus has helped in giving us one of the best economic prosperity on record.

President Bush appointed two great conservative Supreme Court Justices.

President Bush is the most pro-life President since Roe Vs Wade criminality has been established.

President Bush is one of the greatest Presidents ever, despite the lies of the left wing lunatics, the frustrated Buchaninites and faux right wing nuts and the left wing media that say otherwise.

God bless President Bush. God bless our brave troops. God bless America.

Exactly! It could be worse. Our leading candidate could have been asleep in the Lincoln bedroom while her husband used a White House interns' private parts as a humidor for his cigar. Oh, wait...

WOW! Fred Thompson terrifies the entire spectrum from left to right, he hasn’t even announced yet and every article I seen assumes that he is going to be the next president of the United States. I think it’s the fact that a real grass roots campaign is Drafting Fred Thompson into the race. I truly believe this is the first Presidential Draft I have ever seen, and I know it must be powerful if it’s so rare.

Thompson was the backup QB. Now he's the starter.

So wasn't Tom Brady, replacing Drew what's-his-name. The New England Patriots never looked back. Neither will we.
