Fred Thompson Seeks $4.6 Million
NewsMax ^ | June 6, 2007

Posted on 06/06/2007 3:54:25 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Supporters of Fred Thompson are seeking to raise $4.6 million to help launch the former senator and "Law & Order” star’s expected run for president in 2008.

A group called the First-Day Founders got the ball rolling when all 100 members each donated the primary maximum of $2,300 on June 1, the day Thompson’s exploratory committee filed with the Tennessee secretary of state, allowing the committee to begin fundraising.

If the First-Day Founders come through with their fundraising efforts, "Thompson presumably would start off with $4.6 million in ‘seed money,’” The Hill newspaper reported.

"Speculation has been rampant as of late that the former senator is all but in the race … and such aggressive fundraising efforts seem to support that notion.”

Some analysts believe that Thompson will not announce his candidacy before the end of the second filing period because he might appear financially weak compared to candidates who have had more time to raise money, according to The Hill.

In addition to the First-Day Founders, several Web sites that were formed to urge a Thompson run have been raising money as well. GrassrootsVoter.com claims it has signed 17,000 volunteers from all 50 states, and www.Fred08.com is also asking for donations.

“Someone will need to explain why a term and a half senator with a mediocre (at best) record deserves to be seen as the great conservative hope.”

Because he is not insane like mccain... he is not an east coast Governor of one of the most LIBERAL states in America (and somewhat of a flip flopper like his fellow statesman kerry)... he is not pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage... he is not anti-gun... he is pro tax cuts... he is anti-amnesty... he is not an isolationist... he is tough on the dims... he kicked mikey moore’s big behind... he is committed to fight radical islam and terror... and except for CFR; it is hard to find a vote that Fred made during his 8 years in the Senate, that equals the liberalism of “some” of the votes of any of the other Senators running for President... in either party.

Actually, Tancredo and Hunter are the only other two (IMHO) Conservatives of good stead... in the race.

I heard directly from one of Fred’s former speechwriters that it’s a load of garbage, that Fred often was in his office long after everyone went home. I also heard an interview with the author of the new Thompson biography and he described his conversation with one of Fred’s Tennessee aides, who laughed at the charge and said she QUIT because it was killing her trying to keep up with Fred’s pace.

The people saying it only do so because they can’t touch him on issues. We know that but good on ya for replying since someone living under a rock may not have heard this charge before and be fooled by those that promulgate it.

a term and a half senator

So a little over 8 years (December 2, 1994 – January 3, 2003). Which normally equates to a two term Governor, a two term Mayor, and a FOUR term Congressman right? So I don't think length of time in the Senate is much of a problem.

Abraham Lincoln was just a lawyer and one-term Congressman.

Jimmy Carter had executive experience as a Governor.

Your line of attack doesn’t hold water.

Run along now back to your Rudy McRomney threads.

I hope they will soon give an address, and phone number where donations can be made by those who cannot, or prefer not to donate online.

Official Position 2002: Education

America’s K-12 education system is not achieving the results it should be. Forty percent of American children can’t read at their grade level. For 35 years, the federal government has been dictating how states and local communities use federal education dollars. Senator Thompson believes that when it comes to educating America’s children, parents and teachers make better decisions than bureaucrats in Washington.

In 2001, Senator Thompson is continuing his efforts to return control of education to states and local communities. He supports President Bush’s blueprint for education, which consolidates over 50 existing federal programs into just seven flexible categories to provide much-needed flexibility to parents and teachers. This legislation would build on the Education Flexibility Partnership Act of 1999 (”Ed-Flex”) to further move decision-making about our students’ education to the parents and teachers who know best.

In 2000, Senator Thompson supported the Affordable Education Act of 2000. This bill, which was passed by the Senate, would have helped families save for their children’s education by increasing the amount they could contribute to an education savings account from the current $500 to $2,000 per year, by allowing education savings account funds to be used for K-12 expenses (such as tutors, computers or uniforms), and by making withdrawals from state and private pre-paid tuition plans tax-free. In addition, this bill would have helped state and local government modernize existing schools or build new schools by easing tax-exempt bond rules.

Senator Thompson was an original cosponsor of the 1999 Ed-Flex bill. This landmark legislation gave states and local school officials greater freedom from federal regulation in the use of federal funds to administer education programs in their districts. Under Ed-Flex, it is the states, and not the federal Department of Education, that can grant local school districts temporary waivers from cumbersome federal requirements.

oops...ya beat me to it. Not sure why my cut-n-paste had bunches of “?” instead of apostrophes. Might be seen as pretty ironic in a post about education.

My thanks to both of you. I’m not a fan of NCLB, but more importantly, I want the federal government out of education.
