Wow. I was sitting at Dayton Airport online after attempting to change my seat assignment unsuccessfully and then attempted to log on to FreeRepublic.com - twice (wireless and ethernet).

Both times the same message appeared:

Access to http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/browse has been blocked by WebMarshal™

Access to this site was blocked by the rule 'Block pornography'.

Contact your WebMarshal administrator if you need access to this site for business purposes.

Your Logon: DRIVERRI2
WebMarshal Server: PUBDCISA (Version: 3.7.3.1040)

A little poking revealed:

Physical Address: 00-18-DE-34-97-30 (wireless)
Physical Address: 00-15-C5-4D-4B-4D (ethernet)

Following the same for both:
IP Address: 10.79.5.23
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.79.1.1
DHCP Server: 1.1.1.1

Lease Expires: 6/5/2007 1:12:40 PM
DNS Server: 10.79.1.1
WINS Server: 10.79.1.1

Anyone have any suggestions on how to contact the WebMarshal adminstrator who has designated FreeRepublic.com as pornography?

I’d find out who runs the city of Dayton’s IT department and grill them. I bet true pornography like DU is allowed to pass...

WebMarshal looks first at metatags > at page content, not specifically at URLs. There may have been active posts that had keywords that was flagged by WebMashal as pornographic.

NetNanny does the same for certain threads -- it's all a function of their filtering software, which typically operates by means of a keyword search, coupled with a database maintained by the service.

My guess is that you're triggering on keywords -- FReepers are a salacious lot.

http://www.marshal.com/kb/article.aspx?id=11606&cNode=3U8N3M

Note under the society category:
Governmental Organizations / Non-Profit Organizations: Includes Web sites with content for which governmental organisations are reponsible (e.g. Government branches or agencies, Police Departments, Fire Departments, Hospitals) and supranational government organisations such as the United Nations or the European Community; non-governmental organisations such as clubs, communities, non-profit organisations and labour unions.

..and under the Information category:
Newsgroups / Bulletin Boards / Blogs: This category contains Web sites that enable the sharing of information such as on a black board, including a variety of topics.

Jim Robinson will need to contact these people to make sure his platforms are not considered porn.

WebMarshal support

What's happening is that your internet browser is being redirected (probably using WCCP protocol) to a proxy server using WebMarshal as a content filter database. Freerepublic.com has been miscategorized as a porn site.

Sometimes these guys share information so it would behoove anyone to contact a content provider to get their sites out of the porn category so as to ensure access.

Some other large content filter databases are as follows:
Websense (www.websense.com)
SmartFilter (http://www.securecomputing.com/index.cfm?skey=85)
Cerberian (www.bluecoat.com)

Many businesses now use blocking software that picks certain sites because they are deemed “objectionable” whether pornographic or politically incorrect. I think that is what has happened in reality.

Although I wonder if they are deeming DU objectionable?

I know a guy here in town who works at the local building supply place, and he is blocked from FR as well.
