Illegals bill hits Senate roadblock
Wa Times ^ | 6/6/07 | Dinan

The immigration deal foundered yesterday, on the verge of collapse under its own weight just days after it appeared to have a clear path to pass the Senate.

By late in the afternoon, Republicans were accusing Democrats of trying to "stuff" them, and Democrats said Republicans were trying to kill the bill by obstructing the process. Both sides were saying they don't know whether the process can be put back on track.

A showdown is scheduled for tomorrow, when Democrats said they will force a vote to set a time limit on the bill, and Republicans have promised to block that move through a filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that if Republicans block his effort to limit debate, it would bump the bill off the schedule and likely derail it for the rest of the year.

"People are looking for excuses on the Republican side to kill this bill," he said.

The Nevada Democrat said Republicans are trying to bog down the bill by piling up dozens of amendments -- most of them from senators who "have no intention of voting for this bill, no matter what we do with it."

But Republicans said Democrats are blitzing them by blocking Republicans from even offering amendments.

If this bill is bumped, where will Lindsey Graham. John McCain, Jon Kyl, Saxby Chambliss, Trent Lott hide....from the angry mobs that await them at home?

We are at a point where it is best not to believe anything that anyone says. There are always people trying to get us to let our guard down.

KEEP CALLING! EVERYONE!

“Let me preface by saying I do NOT support the current bill. But who gets branded by it is a real concern.”

With only 23% of Americans supporting this nonsense, I would not worry about who gets the blame. In fact, I’d be taking credit.

It will be funny if the Illegal Immigration Crisis backfires on the Democrats and costs them Congress and the Presidency in 2008!

Bush's stand notwithstanding, the American people know that the Democrats are encouraging Illegal Immigration in the hope of enlarging their base support. Swing voters and even some Leftists want Illegal Immigration stopped and the Border closed.

I’m not ready to believe that. Until Sessions or Hunter etc...comes out and says it’s been killed for the second time, don’t believe these stories.

Frankly, I don’t give a whit if the GOP does get “branded” with the failure of this “reform” bill. If and when this national suicide bill gets tabled, I want these GOP senators coming back in trepidation to the voters to explain their positions. Then we can insert a steel rod down their spines - after we extract our steel-toed boots from most of their lazy and/or traitorous butts - and emphatically explain to them that if another insane bill like this comes up - they need to be the first on the block to proudly, publicly and decisively kill it, with malice.

The bill I was referring to is one that would build the fence you’re talking about. The bill passed last year only covers 700 miles of the border. I mean a bill that shuts the whole damn thing down...and then do it.

There are always people trying to get us to let our guard down.

That's their whole methodology, "we have to get this done quickly," "it's better than doing nothing at all," etc. They've tried everything. Lies about what the bill does. They've tried waiting until the furor dies down (over the Memorial Day weekend -- and week). They've tried insults, obfuscation, threats, lies, fear. They've tried to play on sympathy for the illegals. They've played the race card. They want this really, really badly. They don't get it this time, they'll try it again in another 8-14 months. When they do, they'll use the same tactics.

Keep calling-make the Repubs understand they will pay a terrible price -lose election if they continue!

They are going to pay a price regardless.

The party jumped the shark on this bill.

What we need is true leadership: someone that calls for true enforcement, and CALLS Mexico on their illigal attempt at helping individuals to break OUR law.

“And neither side crediting the people who rose up with one voice against this disaster of a bill.”

And that is the real tragedy, that they will not recognize publicly what their constituents want. And why is that so hard? Perhaps because they are afraid to admit they were initially supporting a flawed piece of legislation. Let’s see: I was for the bill before my constituents told me they would fire my ass if I voted for it. Or perhaps, taking a page from John (he was in Vietnam you know) Kerry’s book: I was for it before I was against it.

If the Republican leaders had any smarts, which I doubt, they would run everything past our Oklahoma Senators who seem to have their hands on the pulse of the Republican base.

==> “I think the Dems really want the Republicans to kill it. They want to blame it on them too though:’)” <==

Well, don’t tell them, but I really want Republicans to be tossed into that brier patch. I believe that support for the abominable immigration bill is truly a minority position, and will lose a lot more votes for dems than pubs.

Kyl can stay if he learns the lesson. Graham and Warner and Hagel and all the truly disgusting RINOs have to go. Conservatives in those states need to start lining good conservatives to knock them out in the primaries. Electing Dems is not the answer, either. Get rid of Graham, it will send a strong message to Chambliss, and he will never do this crap again.
