A phantom stood behind an invisible podium in the New Hampshire Republican debates last night. But unlike the first two debates, no one tried to pretend former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson wasnt a key player in the upcoming presidential race. It was another Thompson who introduced Fred to the audience -- by saying he was Thompson -- Tommy -- not the other one.
Just then, the absence of Fred Thompson seeped into the evening atmosphere. Some say the stalling to officially announce a candidacy is damning -- while others insist it is downright smart. Nevertheless, the silence was a golden emphasis of Thompsons prominence in the race last night.
Hes been embraced in word by many conservatives who feel alienated by the current selection of blue-tinted Republican candidates, but is he all that they dare to hope for? Thompson has been dubbed a savior for the Republican nomination, but the hype could be watered in the disillusionment of unrealistic optimism.

Perhaps he's ashamed.
It's right here on YouTube.
I don't care how "pure" his intentions were. He savaged the First Amendment. Shameful.

The Candidates on Campaign Finance [Ramesh Ponnuru]
Over the weekend, Mitt Romney called for repealing McCain-Feingold. Which made me wonder about the candidates’ record on the issue. McCain’s we know about.
Romney, it turns out, hassurprise, surprisebeen on both sides of campaign-finance reform. In his 1994 race, Romney came out for banning political action committees, limiting spending on federal races (something the Supreme Court has not allowed), and opposed allowing larger contributions. All told, those positions place him to the left of McCain-Feingold, which doubled the allowable size of individual donations to candidates. In his 2002 race, he took the position that campaign contributions should be taxed at a 10 percent race, with the proceeds going to public funding of all campaigns.
How pathetic you are. You aren’t even making any kind of sense any more. Not that you ever made much sense to begin with.
It’s going to be nice to watch Precious Willard go down in flames. Not because of him, but because I’ll enjoy your misery when it happens. In fact, I’m enjoying it now as you watch your hopes and dreams slowly circle the drain. And all that at the hand of a man that you think so little of.
I’m sure there will be plenty of therapy available to you in your time of need.
A devout Romney devotee criticizing Fred Thompson’s record on abortion when his own candidate’s record is 100 times worse.
Then he criticizes on CFR, when Willard proposed much worse restrictions on free speech.
Any of this seem familiar to anyone? :)
Get used to it. Just like the other candidates, Fred isn’t going to get a free ride. A presidential run is hard, tough, slog. If he he doesn’t have a thicker skin than you do, if he pouts, crys, and calls for dad to intervene anytime someone says something that puts him in a bad light or hurts his feelings, he has no business running for president.
Nobody’s pouting and crying. If you had anything worthwhile or intellectually honest to say, all Fred supporters would welcome criticism from you. But you don’t. All you have are lies, halftruths, and conjecture. You’re a joke. And an unfunny one at that.
The fact that Fred hasn't been there doesn't mean that folks haven't been able to find out his political positions. The others just jumped in early so they could get a head start on fundraising. Fred couldn't because of contractual obligations, but we who have been watching him know this, and know he'll announce when HE'S ready, and what WE want has nothing to do with it. I don't think delaying has caused him any problems.
I like him for precisely that reason. I'm sick of the made for TV cameras, blow-dried look of the candidates. Fred's "I'm here, I'm wrinkled, get used to it" attitude is great!!
It sure would be great, cause that's my birthday!! What a gift!
Oh, yeah, he's an overnight success all right./s
You need to do some reading up on just what Fred has done since his start in politics over 30 years ago in Tennessee. He's not some Johnny come lately in the world of politics, but he's shown that he CAN do other things than live off the Federal payroll, and frankly that's one of the things that I like BEST about him!
So had Bob Dole. Just because they've hung around DC for most of their professional lives, are we supposed to give them a shot at the Presidency? I don't think so.
