Dear President Bush:
I could not have imagined writing a president (from my party) the following back in my ninth-grade civics class. Yet, write I must. Sir, you should know that there are dozens of millions of "honest" Americans who share my convictions and are waiting for the ballot box to punish supporters of amnesty.
I am offended and outraged that you, sir, saw fit in your speech May 29 to brand us as not "[wanting] to do what's right for America," because we, along with an increasing number of the elected oppose the comprehensive immigration reform bill. As has been said before, "America needs immigration enforcement, not immigration reform." And that, sir, cannot and will not be accomplished by what amounts to a slick carnival shell trick of trying to convince us the bill is something other than a blanket amnesty.
In your speech, you asked if "elected officials have the courage necessary to put [this] comprehensive immigration plan in place." I would ask if they have the courage to commit political suicide by forcing this, or any other amnesty bill, upon Americans. It may do well to revisit "Earthquake in Pennsylvania" by Brad Bumsted and Debra Erdley (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, May 17, 2007).
Why, Mr. President, would you use the American flag as a backdrop for your speech while two border patrolmen sit imprisoned (11 and 12 years) for daring to apprehend illegal drug smugglers invading our country men whom your office has seen fit not to support as you repeatedly tell us how pastoral the "religious sect" is that, only a few days ago, once again sought to inflict catastrophic harm on our people. But I digress.
That flag, Mr. President, means something to me. It represents the belief and commitment my family held as they proudly went off to war some of whom defended this nation when there was yet racial segregation in our military. It represents honor, freedom, truth and sovereignty. It promises that American citizens from the humblest of beginnings can achieve success beyond their dreams. It does not represent a path to citizenship that circumvents and undermines the path of people who are immigrating here legally.
What do you say, Mr. President, to those people who have immigrated here legally often waiting for years, shouldering tremendous financial burdens to have their dream of American citizenship realized? What do you say to families who forsook their native languages to speak only English? What do you and the supporters of this bill tell those who immigrated here desiring not just a better life, but because they wanted to be Americans?
There is a demonstrable difference, Mr. President, between assimilation and infiltration. Defiantly ignoring our laws, burning our flag while proudly flying their own, is not a characteristic of an assimilist. How many of the illegals that we see every day have American flags displayed in their homes or hanging from their vehicle mirrors?
I submit that your assertion the new options for immigrant and foreign workers wouldn't start until tougher security is in place is tantamount to a parent telling their children Santa Claus won't bring them presents if they misbehave. Acceptance of said threat as being legitimate is predicated upon a child's belief in Santa, and/or whether he has witnessed mommy under the mistletoe kissing someone dressed in a Santa suit that looked exactly like his father.
You were only partially right when you said, "Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don't think the government can fix the problems." You would have been 100 percent correct had you said, "We don't trust or believe the government has any intention of honoring their word." Asking the voters to "give [you] a chance to fix the problem," is akin to President Reagan's "nine most terrifying words" quote, except in your case it's eight.
Those of us opposing the bill do not do so because we, as you said, "[are] finding fault with it," nor because we are, as you said, intent on "[finding] something [we] don't like." We oppose the measure because you and the bill's supporters are intent on rewarding criminals. That begs the question, sir, as to why you and Congress are so insistent upon rewarding felons at no small cost to American citizenry.
To suggest this bill in any way shapes immigration reform in a manageable way for the future is pure Pollyanna. We remember, Mr. President, your saying Harriet Miers "[was] the best-qualified person" you could find (in all of America) to nominate for associate justice. And for the record, it wasn't this essayist who said "you may as well appoint [your] chauffer head of NASA as to put Miers on the Supreme Court" although referenced person echoed my sentiments exactly.
Mr. President, people who truly desire to embrace Americanism do not start their citizenship as criminals having violated our sovereignty. They come here legally. They do not come here illegally then stage repeated massive protests, threatening to cripple the economy that enables them to flood their countries of origin with our currency. I am saying nothing that you are not already aware of, which again raises the question of why you insist on leaving such a legacy. A bell, Mr. President, cannot be unrung, and the bell you are determined to ring will have devastating effects for the rest of America's existence.
Many of us want to support you, and many of us have from the beginning but America belongs to the people, Mr. President, and that includes your office, Congress, and the courts and many we are that are prepared to reclaim them. We no longer fear losing in order to win. We will continue not to support our party until we have ousted, or allowed to be ousted, those who promise but never deliver, and we will persist until we have a presidential candidate in whom we have confidence.
In closing, Mr. President I would not discount my words because of their simplicity. They reflect the exact sentiments that millions of Americans across this great land are saying amongst themselves and voicing to their elected. We, sir, are tired of arrogant politicians who thumb their noses at those responsible for their cushy careers. We can no longer vote you out of office but you and the party hierarchy will know it is because of your contempt for our opinions (not the war on terror), that they have been set back for the foreseeable future.
Respectfully,

The more I hear about this bill the more I want to (fill in the blank).
I agree. I have sent my copy of my voter registration change (to unafilliated) to my senators and I pray that others have also.Life as we know it is over if this turkey passes. Guess the next step will be to start loading magazines and make sure that scope is on target..Never thought it would come to this.
Call your Senators and your entire state Congressional delegation today to express your disappoval. Call the RNC and the state GOP. Send explanatory materials to your friends and family.
These are the things I’ve done today, in addition to the same thing 2 weeks ago. One last effort before I remove myself from the party that harbors quislings and traitors such as Lindsay Graham and - sad to say - our President.
We can still send this abomination back to the McCain-Kennedy sinkhole from which it was spawned.
No new laws, no "fixing the system".
Enforcement only.
It was my plan to trash a 30 year affiliation with the Republican Party this week and to register as independent.
But I’m going to respect the conversation I had today with a senior staffer at my state GOP office. “Don’t leave us yet, give it one more try.”
So that’s what I’m doing with my spare time this week. One more try, one last effort. If George Bush calls us “racists” this week I might give it up, but for now I’m back on the phone and on email, and letting all of them know how I and other conservatives are assessing this outrage.
One thing I do know: if this traitorous atrocity is passed and then signed, there will be hell to pay within the Republican Party.
I don't want to get too worked up about something that could be a staff snafu, but jeese, makes you wonder just how out of touch they are.
Wonderfully written...exactly how we feel...
As usual, a GREAT job by Mychal!
Well written. Thanks for the post.

BUMP!!
Interesting way to get the point across! Assuming they keep a list of donors, those names would carry a stronger message.
