McConnell key to immigration bill
The Washington Times ^ | June 4, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 06/04/2007 8:10:24 AM PDT by Kaslin

The fate of the immigration bill comes down to Senate Republicans' leader, Mitch McConnell, and whether he sides with President Bush and Democratic leaders or with rank-and-file members of his own party.
His choices: Accept Democrats' demands to finish the bill this week without major changes, or rally with his Republicans who say the bill is bad and getting worse, and want more time to fight the proposal.
"The only thing that can save us now is if McConnell made an appeal to Republicans that this thing is out of control and we need to step back from it, and we're not getting the amendments we want," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican. "He could do that, but I'm not sure where he is right now."
Debate on the bill resumes today, and Republican leaders will have to decide quickly whether to push for a drawn-out debate.

I do not trust this guy, but there are a lot of Republicans that I do not trust.

If he is the key, we are lost. His point person on the immigration bill is an open-borders guy from Texas. It will be interesting to see which of the Senate Republicans, if any, decide to take him one.

Hmm that's a tough choice: a liberal lame duck president with an approval rating at 28% along with his democratic allies Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid or practically the entire Republican conservative caucus and the base that voted them in. What's it going to be Mitch? Take your time, you got a day to make up your mind.

Republicans use words like "confusion" to describe their party's approach

I use the words "stupid", "traitorous", and "suicidal" to describe the party's approach.

I've been calling and writing him for two weeks. The only response I've had so far is a letter thanking me for my concern about global warming, a concern which I did not express to him.

I know this much, if he votes for this bill, I know of at least 11 votes he's not going to get next year when he's up for reelection.

I just spoke to a female staff member in McConnell’s office urging the Senator to do everything he can do to stop this bill. I quoted the WT article and referenced Demint’s comments as well as Sen. Cornyn’s opposition. I told the staff member that the ‘08 elections will be disaster for those GOP’ers on the wrong side(amnesty)of this issue. Quite frankly, I had the impression I was speaking to a fence post.

McConnell is a shrewd operator and has come through for Conservatives in the past.

Call his office.

Maybe this will help Mitch in this momentous decision of his:

Poll: Bush Base Erodes on Immigration Debate

Fewer than half of Republicans, 45 percent in this ABC News/Washington Post poll, now approve of how Bush is handling immigration, down from 61 percent in April — that's a 16-point drop in six weeks. Just 35 percent of conservatives approve, down from 48 percent.

Among all Americans, just 29 percent now approve of his handling of immigration, a career low.

That 29% figure is right around what his overall job approval rating is.

Here’s what I sent in to McConnell via email:

“Dear Senator McConnell,

Though I am not a Kentucky resident, I am writing to you in your capacity as the Republican leader in the Senate about the immigration bill that is now being considered. Please note that I have voted Republican in every election since I have been eligible to vote.

I am AGAINST passage of this bill. I am not against immigration at all, having come from a family that immigrated mostly in the 1920’s (and was saved from Hitler’s gas chambers as a result); my wife is also a LEGAL immigrant from Mexico. I want this nation to continue admitting immigrants - but ONLY those who want to become Americans, to speak our language, adopt our customs, obey our laws, educate their children to be good, decent, law-abiding Americans, etc.

Giving amnesty - AND THAT IS WHAT THIS BILL DOES, NO MATTER THE SPIN - to those who have broken our laws, and forgiving their failures to declare income and pay income tax, is utterly UNACCEPTABLE. It rewards unlawful behavior - effectively saying that obeying the law is optional, and the only people who choose that option are stupid for doing so - and it penalizes those who have done things the right way. I have spent nearly $10,000 to LEGALLY get my wife into this country, get her a permanent resident card and get her naturalized. Give me a good reason why I should have obeyed the law in light of this travesty, this abomination, that is being jammed down the throats of the American people.

Senator, DO NOT allow this bill to pass. If you do, I will NEVER donate a single penny to the Republican Party or to the Senatorial or House campaign committees. I will only donate to those who want to preserve the rule of law, to preserve our culture and to reward those who do things the correct and legal way.”

BTW, I’ll be calling him later. I’ve already contacted my Senators (in TX), and will do so again today as a reminder.

I urge everyone who reads this thread to make phone calls, send emails, faxes, etc. We have GOT to stop this thing!

Here’s some more intrigue for the immigration bill debate:

Insiders tell me that there is a movement afoot in the Kalifornia legislature in Sacramento to disolve the Williamson Act.
For those who don’t know what that is: The Wiliamson Act give active AGRICULTURAL land a property tax break. In the fast rising land values- years ago- it was created to keep the land in production, and keep the farmers and ranchers from being bullied by the developers and assessors alike in a squeeze play.

What difference you ask? Besides potentially putting millions of acres of land out of production of the food that you buy each and every day, it will eliminate the “jobs” that the illegals or braceros are alledgely coming to the USA to perform. Farmers and ranchers cannot afford to pay the property taxes assessed “for the best use” which would bring in more and more development and stress the water supplies and contribute to more and more pollution.
So at the same time we are trying to give 40 million or so illegals amnesty, we are wiping out the very jobs they are supposed to be coming here to do. So that potentially puts them on the public dole in far greater numbers.

I swear- the left hand and the right hand in Government NEVER know what the other is doing.

I could not get through on the phone, it must be ringing of the hooks. So I used the webform to contact him and left my message

This is what I wrote

Dear Honorable Senator McConnell,

It is imperative for the survival of the Republican Party that you do not accept the Democrat's proposal to finish the immigration bill this week without any major changes.
The bill is bad without the needed amendments for our party and it is bad for the country.

Sincerely

My real name here
