Backers of Immigration Bill More Optimistic:Resistance Fading, Lawmakers Say [in their dreams]
Washington Post ^ | 6/4/07 | Jonathan Weisman

After a week at home with their constituents, the Senate architects of a delicate immigration compromise are increasingly convinced they will hold together this week to pass an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, with momentum building behind one unifying theme: Today's immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.

Congress's week-long Memorial Day recess was expected to leave the bill in tatters. But with a week of action set to begin today, the legislation's champions say they believe the voices of opposition, especially from conservatives, represent a small segment of public opinion. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who led negotiations on the bill for his party, said the flood of angry calls and protests that greeted the deal two weeks ago has since receded every day.

"You just have to recognize you will get 300 calls, you'll get conflicts at town hall meetings -- all of them negative," said Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who consulted with Kyl and hopes to carry a similar deal through the House in July. "The last few days have really turned things around."

<< Congress’s week-long Memorial Day recess was expected to leave the bill in tatters. >>

Yeah, right. Talk about heavy, heavy spin.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a special interest as powerful as this combination of illegals-using open-borders business lobby and the left-wing immigration advocacy crowd, to just stick such an unpopular legislation like this up the rear of the American people.

NO! Our government is broken, not our laws. In fact, our government is BENT AND BROKEN. We have good laws that our malfeasant government will NOT ENFORCE.

Nice try Post.

Flake (appropriate name) doesn't think there is much opposition left, eh? Time to start pounding his phones, fax and mailbox from the "few" of us left who are against amnesty. It's not too early to start on the House side.

Today's immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.

This is true. Unfortunately they have decided to address the situation by making it worse, with disastrous consequences looming as a result.

they believe the voices of opposition, especially from conservatives, represent a small segment of public opinion.

So, we are:

Nativists, xenophobic/xenaphobes [Tony Snow, et al]

Bigots [Lindsey Graham]

Vigilantes [George W Bush]

And now we represent a small segment of public opinion.

I guess Senator Kyl overlooked the recent poll that showed only 28% of those surveyed support the current amensty for illegals bill.

The Heritage Foundation is estimating that the total cost to us over the lifetime of each illegal will be slightly over $1 million. Imagine the staggering overall cost of this immigration bill if you multiply it times the total number of illegals that will result from passage of this bill, given the following info.

The "Z visas" also pave the way for "chain immigration" allowing an immigrant to bring in relatives. Previously chain immigration was limited to immediate family members. New legislation will open it to include possibly more than 11 family members of any relation. Once those family members become resident they too will be able to bring in their extended families and so on.

As I have posted in other threads on immigration, even the 12 million number was a total guess by somebody in D.C. and was not even remotely based on any factual data. About a month or two ago, I read an article (I had thought by one of the founders of the Minuteman) who had worked with one of the think tanks to attempt to derive a better number. His estimate was between 35 and 55 million. But the scary part about this amnesty bill is how it expands the number of illegals whatever the number. Let's assume for discussion that the number is as low as 20 million...watch what happens under this bill. In 1986 just less than 3 million illegals were granted an amnesty (US citizenship); they each brought up on average 5 more family members who also instantly became US citizens, so 3 million X 5 = 15 million + the original 3 mil = 18 million. Now consider the 20 million that have come up since 1986 get amnesty under this new bill, and they haul up 5 more each: 100 million + that 20 = 120,000,000. And what if the existing number is 50 million, the new total will become 250+50=300 million new neighbors. Now consider where they fall economically? At the bottom, unlike legal immigration where we now expect something of value, these illegals bring nothing but 3rd grade educations and the trappings of a failed culture, like grafiti and 3rd world diseases. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TO AMNESTY!!!!

Not much you can do if they’re lying to themselves...”it’s really NOT that many people against my bill”.

They need a gun pointed at their right temple while forcing them to look at ANY poll on their bill.

I believe the calls, emails, and faxes will rev up again starting tomorrow. People haven’t forgotten, of course there’s going to be a lull because of the Memorial Day weekend and Congresscritters going home and avoiding their constituents.

We've got to keep the pressure on our senators and congressman!!! This article, in my opinion, is nothing but a ruse, meant to dishearten those of us who think this amnesty is a done deal.

Yes, well stated, and just think — all of that PLUS THE FACT THAT THE BORDER IS GOING TO REMAIN OPEN. So we must conclude that our government is set on giving the USA to Mexico. There is no end to the flood of illegals, no end to their chain migration, and their heavy breeding habits. Add it all up. A demographic disaster for America.

This whole thing is totally beyond belief. A horrible nightmare.

Same here. I'm sure that our friends on talk radio and elsewhere will see to it and remind the folks we need to keep the pressure on until this bill is dead!!!
