Buddies ready for Thompson
St. Petersburg Times ^ | June3, 2007 | ADAM C. SMITH

We're hearing lots of Florida Buzz lately for actor/former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is testing the waters for a presidential campaign by opening a political committee to raise money. Many veterans of GOP presidential campaigns in Florida worked closely with Thompson when he was helping organize his mentor Howard Baker's campaign for a strong showing at the Florida GOP's "Presidency II" straw poll in 1979. Just before that vote, Baker dropped out and Baker's Florida delegates were handed off to George H.W. Bush.

Among the prominent former Pinellas legislators now helping the Law & Order actor's prospective '08 campaign: RZ "Sandy" Safley formerly with Mitt Romney, Curt Kiser (formerly with Rudy Giuliani) and Jack Latvala. It says something about a candidate who can earn endorsements from such moderate Pinellas Republicans as well as glowing words from former Florida gubernatorial candidate and Florida Right to Life president Ken Connor and Florida Family Policy Council president John Stemberger.

The buzz is we can expect state Reps. Denise Grimsley, R-Lake Placid, and Doug Holder, R-Sarasota, to jump on board if Thompson gets all the way in. Lobbyist/politico Oscar Juarez of Orlando, another former Baker organizer, is enthusiastic about his longtime friend Thompson and may jump ship from John McCain, and former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has been calling a bunch of Florida GOP money raisers lately urging support for Thompson.

"The Fred Thompson tent is very, very broad, " said Safley, who is among the key supporters across the country committed to raise at least $46, 000 in the next month. "He has a very clear vision, and a charisma and presence. He's a folksy person, but he's viewed as being very bright, very calm, very reasonable at a time when this country is looking for calmness and strong leadership."

Yes, Thompson support is broad.

Why?

Is there a thread on FR that lists Fred's qualifications?

I'm not aware that he has ever administered even a Boy Scout troop. I don't see anything in his past that demonstrates that he is qualified to be President of the U.S.A.

Fred is certainly not Ronald Reagan by a long shot.

Help me out here. Why would I ever want to vote for Fred?

After what Dubya has done to us, Fred is going to have to prove that he's got what it takes to be President before I would vote for him.

He's 35, he's a natural born US citizen and he is capable of winning. There are no other 'qualifications'.

I hope that is a standard you will hold ALL candidates to.

Fred is certainly not Ronald Reagan by a long shot.

Fred is the closest thing we have seen to Reagan since, well Reagan. Fred articulates conservative values better than anyone in a long time and possesses as much 'qualifications' as anyone running on the Democratic side.

You are confusing “eligibility” with “qualification”.

Qualification - A quality, ability, or accomplishment that makes a person suitable for a particular position or task.

Fred is eligible. Don’t know about qualified?

I am not confusing anything, it is posters who are coming in trying to confuse things. Fred is the best man for the job, IMHO. There is nothing that one can put on a resume that proves one will make a great president.

With all due respect, I asked a serious question that I felt that a strong Fred supporter like you would be able to answer.

However, your answers have been more than a little disappointing.

Reagan had been a successful governor of a state as large as most countries. Reagan had expressed his conservative views for many years in clear, understandable ways.

I'm not aware that Thompson has ever administered anything or has expressed his conservative views in any way close to the way Reagan did.

Other than being an actor, I don't see that Fred has much in common with Reagan at all.

I'm not trying to be a troll. I would really like an extensive and concrete list of reasons why anyone should vote for Fred.

So, far the leading reason seems to be that he's not one of the already announced candidates, who all seem to be lacking (except for Duncan Hunter).

Perhaps, I'm asking the wrong person. If so, I apologize.

Have you seen Reagan's resume?

If this thread is just supposed to be a rah-rah Fred thread, I'll go away.

Fred expresses conservative views better than anyone in the field.:

You’ve been a member here since ‘99 and you don’t know anything about FDT? You have to be full of it. Quite pretending and tell us what your angle is...

Clinton had a nice resume, so did Bush. Jimmy Carter's resume wasn't bad either. Smart guy, nuclear engineer, governor.

Good luck supporting Duncan. You have no interest in Fred, that is fine. There is plenty of stuff out there if you really care, but you don't. This is the age of the internet. Google is your friend.

I have been watching his youtube videos. This guy (FDT) is good. He is real good. There is no way to learn what he has. He has what few Presidential candidates have ever had, a real ability to connect and to communicate. Only Reagan and JFK demonstrated this gift in my lifetime. Rudy, McCain and Romney must be very worried. They are far, far out of their league.

Why am I starting to get the impression that this is not the post to ask any questions about Fred?

Where’s the post for the open minded people who can actually question a candidates “qualifications” without the name calling?

Guess I agree with the previous comment. This is just a go-Fred-go bit of fluff instead of a discussion about the merits of the (maybe) candidate.
