Danish Ship Hijacked Off Somalia

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- A Danish cargo ship with five crew was hijacked off Somalia's coast, the owner said Saturday, citing a report by the French navy.

The Danica White was on its way to the Kenyan port of Mombasa from Dubai when it was seized by pirates Saturday or late Friday, Jorgen Folmer, a spokesman for Danish shipping company H. Folmer & Co. said.

He said a French naval vessel in the area had confirmed the ship was hijacked but was unable to intervene because it could not enter Somali waters.

What in the h$ll would the Somalis do if the French DID intervene? Send out their Navy and engage the French? This is rediculous, especially considering that it was an EU ship.

I can't count how many time the Taiwanese, Koreans, the Japanese or the Russians have violated territorial waters harvesting fish. A violation indeed but the hijacking of a Danish merchantman is piracy.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again...

A shipping company could probably make a huge amount of money if, in addition to the freight they’re hauling, were to have a number of luxury berths, and 8 or so pintle mounted M-2 .50cal machineguns. Then the ship goes through pirate infested waters, and the “pirate tourists” get to man the guns and open fire on any pirate ships that approach. Of course, just like when you hire a guide for a hunt, there would be a number of professionals on board, with additional and heavier weapons, just in case.

I’ll bet they’d clean up, and it might just help with the piracy problem.

Cutting the corner here to save some gas seems really dumb. The history of muslims in little boats attacking under crewed commercial vessels is extensive. Now the ship owners have lost their investment ( unless they had a big insurance policy ).

Their sovereignty seems a joke and we seem to be the only force of reason in the area. If we can not rescue the Danish boat, maybe we could sink a few pirate boats instead ?

Here's a neat little surface-to-sea missile:

The fuze (a combination of the original and a Canadian design) has a delayed actuation so that the missile penetrates the hull before detonating. Splinter and pressure is enough to stop small and medium sized vessels.

I must first confess total ignorance of maritime law.
But I would be flabbergasted, literally if international laws and agreements concerning piracy do not address this issue in a more rational way.

Vessels, not calling at Somalia, are advised to steer at least 200 NM clear of Somali waters at all times.

Even 100 NM is a long way for those losers to swim home...
