President Bushs advocacy of an immigration overhaul and his attacks on critics of the plan are provoking an unusually intense backlash from conservatives who form the bulwark of his remaining support, splintering his base and laying bare divisions within a party whose unity has been the envy of Democrats.
It has pitted some of Mr. Bushs most stalwart Congressional and grass-roots backers against him, sparking a vitriol that has at times exceeded anything seen yet between Mr. Bush and his supporters, who have generally stood with him through the toughest patches of his presidency. Those supporters now view him as pursuing amnesty for foreign law breakers when he should be focusing on border security.
Postings on conservative Web sites this week have gone so far as to call for Mr. Bushs impeachment, and usually friendly radio hosts, commentators and Congressional allies are warning that he stands to lose supporters a potentially damaging development, they say, when he needs all the backing he can get on other vital matters like the war in Iraq.
I think President Bush hurts himself every time he says it is not amnesty, said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, referring to the bills legalization process for immigrants. We are not all that stupid.
This week, in discussing Mr. Bushs recent comments accusing conservative critics of the immigration legislation of fear-mongering, Rush Limbaugh told listeners: I just wish he hadnt done it because hes not going to lose me on Iraq, and hes not going to lose me on national security. But he might lose some of you.
Such sentiments have reverberated through talk radio, conservative publications like National Review and Fox News. They have also appeared on Web sites including RedState.com and FreeRepublic.com...

Much as it shocks me to note this on FR; that may well become a Badge of Honor.
What can I say? I supported and defended Bush for six years. And, he kicked me in the teeth.
I feel worse about him now than I ever felt about Clinton because I always knew what Clinton was.
You might say you don't feel the sting of a stock that collapses like Enron, unless you were invested in it.
I was heavily invested in Bush. And, I got killed in that market.
Actually, Kennedy voted against the ‘86 amnesty.
“White House officials said it had led them to engage the blogosphere in a concerted way for the first time, posting defenses on liberal and conservative sites. “
Cool ... are they going to send a hack out to FR to defend the indefensible?
Fresh Fish!

“This latest horrible Amnesty bill was written by Democrat Ted Kennedy. DEMOCRAT Ted Kennedy has been behind every Amnesty bill and every bill that has increased immigration from the 3rd world based on family ties since 1965. Before 1965 almost all immigrants to the U.S were from Europe. And they became Americanized. Now after Ted Kennedy and his bills since 1965 we have had an invasion of 3rd world poor, socialist, uneducated democrat voters. That Savage don’t REPEATEDLY make this point shows that Savage is just trying to blame the GOP.”
This is quite true and very important.
But savage is just a talk show host.
WHY IS BUSH LETTING KENNEDY WRITE THIS IMMIGRATION BILL HE SUPPORTS? THAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM!

Before 2006 I would have voted for the Republican no matter what because it had to be better than voting for the DBM/dem. However, reality has set in and now we should all realize allowing "moderates/rinos" into postions of power is a huge mistake because they very often go against conservative principles that have made this country great. They are even worst than DBM/dems because moderate/rino work to undermine conservative principles are much more effective.
Bush is a moderate. I'm glad he WON the presidency over Gore, howerver, he is still moderate in his approach to all politics and war. This makes him extremely dangerous in his decision making process, even detrimental as we have now seen since the last election. As conservatives we have to fight to wrest and regain control of the Republican Party back from the moderates and reestablish what Newt and the conservatives started in 1994! This time those conservatives must not lose sight of what their objectives must be to move the country in a positive direction. We have to demand they stick to their principles, and no "compromise!"
The administration is trying hard to make Congress think that opposition is fading-nonsense. I tell you, Georgia will have two new senators if they support this bill.
BRING IT ON !! They'd better send a masochist, because they will be abused.
My boyfriend is a proud democrat and a Kerrey supporter, until recently. After I asked him to check out Tancredo’s website, he informed me that he will be voting for Tancredo in the primary, and in the general election. And that’s all because of this amnesty bill.
They are here in force with big long posts, trying to change our minds.
Evidently, they are very unfamiliar with FReepers! We are neither easily influenced nor easily duped.

She’s already here...no doubt a college intern. Do they operate out of the basement of the WH, like the Clintonistas used to?
“I just tell the RNC the money I would have sent them has instead gone to taxes to pay for public services to illegal immigrants.”
What a great line! Mind if I use it? I’m going to write it down on a sticky note to put next to my telephone.
Not one red cent for tribute to Mexico!!!
Excellent!
The nuns used to say “Show me your company and I’ll tell you what you are”.
White House officials said it had led them to engage the blogosphere in a concerted way for the first time, posting defenses on liberal and conservative sites.
You are busted, lady!!!
And pay and pay and pay. It looks now like only WE can stop this insurgency, in our own towns, counties and states. Push your local elected servants...hard and often. Make real demands and let them know you're following them closely. Enough is enough of this crap.
Our hometowns are where to begin. I live not too far from Hazleton, PA., where the local mayor, Lou Barletta, has stepped out front and center to stop illegal aliens from ruining his hometown.
Of course, the usual suspects...amnesty groups and ACLU are challenging the mayor and the people of Hazleton, who are solidly behind him.
We may not be able to interdict illegal aliens at the border, but we can make it very uncomfortable for them in our hometowns.
“We may not be able to interdict illegal aliens at the border, but we can make it very uncomfortable for them in our hometowns.”
I’d like to see the ACLU made so uncomfortable that they can no longer live in the US.
As far as opposition fading... We’re just now getting to the meat and potatoes part of this bill as more are reading the fine print and discovering more and more lies about it put forward by our Congresspeople. (Like illegal immigrants who are HS Graduates getting a fast track green card in 3 yrs. as long as they go to college or join the military — and they’ll get Federal Tuition Assistance, too! — Gee, I thought they said no-one would be on a fast track, or skip ahead in line..).
Thanks. Please feel free to borrow.
Just say NO to Amnesty!! Before its too late!!
