Bush’s Push on Immigration Tests His Base (FR Mentioned)
NY Times ^ | June 3, 2007 | JIM RUTENBERG and CARL HULSE

Posted on 06/02/2007 10:22:51 AM PDT by nj26

President Bush’s advocacy of an immigration overhaul and his attacks on critics of the plan are provoking an unusually intense backlash from conservatives who form the bulwark of his remaining support, splintering his base and laying bare divisions within a party whose unity has been the envy of Democrats.

It has pitted some of Mr. Bush’s most stalwart Congressional and grass-roots backers against him, sparking a vitriol that has at times exceeded anything seen yet between Mr. Bush and his supporters, who have generally stood with him through the toughest patches of his presidency. Those supporters now view him as pursuing amnesty for foreign law breakers when he should be focusing on border security.

Postings on conservative Web sites this week have gone so far as to call for Mr. Bush’s impeachment, and usually friendly radio hosts, commentators and Congressional allies are warning that he stands to lose supporters — a potentially damaging development, they say, when he needs all the backing he can get on other vital matters like the war in Iraq.

“I think President Bush hurts himself every time he says it is not amnesty,” said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, referring to the bill’s legalization process for immigrants. “We are not all that stupid.”

This week, in discussing Mr. Bush’s recent comments accusing conservative critics of the immigration legislation of fear-mongering, Rush Limbaugh told listeners: “I just wish he hadn’t done it because he’s not going to lose me on Iraq, and he’s not going to lose me on national security. But he might lose some of you.”

Such sentiments have reverberated through talk radio, conservative publications like National Review and Fox News. They have also appeared on Web sites including RedState.com and FreeRepublic.com...

I don’t think so. Immigration was not one of my primary issues until this bill came to the fore. But they have shoved it right into our faces, and there’s no getting around the fact that it will destroy the Republican party and the country if it goes through.

It must be defeated or the consequences will be too dismal to contemplate.

They corrected their misreading of the post. That is probably better than they usually do.

Another part of the article;

"White House officials said it had led them to engage the blogosphere in a concerted way for the first time, posting defenses on liberal and conservative sites."

I guess some of us were right in the assumption that some posters who have joined us recently really ARE plants from the administration. With this revelation they can't pretend that they don't know why we are upset... Makes me wonder about some of the newer posters who've been so disrespectful when replying to some of my posts the last few days. Their attitude IS the same as these in our government pushing for Amnesty -- they AREN'T merely citizens who disagree, they are political operatives who are as out of touch as their bosses.

Exactly RJL... Exactly... These are his true feelings. It’s no wonder he’s going to sell his ranch in Texas — don’t think he’ll be very welcome there if this passes.

We fear the end of our culture and our nation... so can we start building that wall now?

I don’t really care if poor 3rd worlders ruined their countries just like I don’t care if some bum lives on the street. they did it to themselves. I don’t have any obligation to take in that bum or to take in 200 million socialists into my country to ruin the last hope of freedom on earth. My only obligation is to myself and to survive.

We are the most charitable country on the face of the earth...We support millions of third world citizens...That will be history when we become them...

"The fearful build walls; the confident demolish them." - George Bush, June 1999

Jorge has been very busy this week building wall of lies to fend off the legitimate outrage of his former supporters.

It’s not that he is saying it’s not amnesty. It’s what he is doing. Absolutely not caring about what the people in this country want. He is hell bent on doing this. He is also not being truthful holding everything secret.

[ http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1843715/posts?page=123#123 ]. I wonder if these White House operatives are the fellow ‘freepers’ who were so incredibly rude & direspectful on several of the immigration threads the last few days. I’ll refrain from naming them outright, but we know who they are... LOL

We've even had a couple of cabinet secretaries posting under their Freeper names of many years' standing.

The problem here is the "insiders" seem to have managed to isolate themselves from the currents of public thought for so long they really have no idea how to catch up with us.

“Why would a conservative donate money to liberal pro-illegal Jerry Brown. Savage did.”

I don’t know. How long ago was this?

IIRC, it was because Jerry Brown did something for troops/veterans in San Francisco. As the only Democrat in the area to do something supportive of the troops, Savage felt inclined to donate.

Eh, I don't personally care. I mean, if it was down to Lieberman or Hillary, who'd you donate to (strawman, I know, but that's the concept)? Still, half the time Savage just sounds like he's gone crazy. I think sometimes he thinks about the direction our country's headed in so deeply that he becomes uber-enraged.

Not that I don't understand why. Up is down, good is evil, etc...

Do you seriously think they would come out and say they were posting FOR the White House? Their intention was to try to sound credible, and if they admitted they were operatives they wouldn't have a chance...

yeah, well, it’s tunnel vision vs wide-angle vision......I’m looking at the big picture.....this guy genuflects to anyone but the American populace while putting on the distraction of a reasonably good show of intent regarding “democracy” in Iraq, which ain’t gonna happen.

It’s waaaaay more than this immigration sellout.

Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late!

Or what? Is anyone going to take government threats seriously anymore? They'll probably get amnesty for that too. What a joke.

I think you’re right. That must be why they are responding with such rude and childish responses attempting to anger us to the point that we give up. One word for them, NEVER...
