Bush’s Push on Immigration Tests His Base (FR Mentioned)
NY Times ^ | June 3, 2007 | JIM RUTENBERG and CARL HULSE

Posted on 06/02/2007 10:22:51 AM PDT by nj26

President Bush’s advocacy of an immigration overhaul and his attacks on critics of the plan are provoking an unusually intense backlash from conservatives who form the bulwark of his remaining support, splintering his base and laying bare divisions within a party whose unity has been the envy of Democrats.

It has pitted some of Mr. Bush’s most stalwart Congressional and grass-roots backers against him, sparking a vitriol that has at times exceeded anything seen yet between Mr. Bush and his supporters, who have generally stood with him through the toughest patches of his presidency. Those supporters now view him as pursuing amnesty for foreign law breakers when he should be focusing on border security.

Postings on conservative Web sites this week have gone so far as to call for Mr. Bush’s impeachment, and usually friendly radio hosts, commentators and Congressional allies are warning that he stands to lose supporters — a potentially damaging development, they say, when he needs all the backing he can get on other vital matters like the war in Iraq.

“I think President Bush hurts himself every time he says it is not amnesty,” said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, referring to the bill’s legalization process for immigrants. “We are not all that stupid.”

This week, in discussing Mr. Bush’s recent comments accusing conservative critics of the immigration legislation of fear-mongering, Rush Limbaugh told listeners: “I just wish he hadn’t done it because he’s not going to lose me on Iraq, and he’s not going to lose me on national security. But he might lose some of you.”

Such sentiments have reverberated through talk radio, conservative publications like National Review and Fox News. They have also appeared on Web sites including RedState.com and FreeRepublic.com...

George Bush is doing to the Republican Party,
what Jimmy Carter did to the Democrat Party.

NO AMNESTY.

I’m using today’s news of the bombing plot at JFK airport to reflect on how many Muslim illegals will receive amnesty (and all the “rights” of citizenship, including exclusion from Gitmo) due to Bush/McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill.

Our party, our national sovereignty, and our homeland security are being sold out with this bill...

George Bush wants to tear America down and liquidate it as we have known and loved it........to a far greater degree than would have been possible during the carter presidency, even though carter would have liked to go much further than he was able at the time.

Get with the concept! The “horse” has left the barn. Closing the door now (the border) will accomplish nothing. The future requires unity and cooperation.

(In this case the “horse” is the USofA’s borders, language and culture that is changing)

You should maybe learn about sending them back and closing the boarders. Not okay lets give them everything.

heck if I don’t pay my taxes do you think the Government will just say oh that’s okay, well this bill does just that.

You no doubt haven’t a clue as to what the program is.

Mr. Rove said he did not think that anger over immigration within the party would affect support for the president on the war and other national security issues. “People are able to say, ‘I don’t need to agree with anyone 100 percent of the time to be with them on the most important issue facing America,’ ” he said.

“Mr. Rove and Dan Bartlett, the White House counselor, said officials would continue trying to persuade critics.” This just about sums it up, doesn’t it?

Probably not intentional, but I like it.

Speaking for myself, your post is the perfect distillate of the current
thought processes of Dubya and his GOP fellow-travelers in their attitude
towards critics of “comprehensive immigration reform”.

It is a good thing we don’t have a plebiscite. President Bush and the Congress are trying to do the best they can with a problem not amenable to slogans.

Rove said the Republicans were going to win the last election too.
I no longer support George Bush period, he lies, and I don’t trust a liar on anything. Everytime he opens his mouth about the amnesty bill he lies. What makes me think he is telling the truth elsewhere?
His WOT? Yeah right! Don’t send our fine young men to die in some godforsaken foreign country while encouraging an invasion at home.
I no longer think George Bush gives a dam about this country.

Not building a fence and passing that Amnesty bill will turn America into a 3rd world socialist hell hole:
The McCain-kennedy Amnesty bill will give Amnesty to 20 million illegals. Those 20 million will be allowed to bring to the U.S.A their extended family so that’s another 200 million illiterate, poor, Marxists who will turn the U.S.A into a socialist hell hole like Venezuela or Cuba. For your information:Socialism doesn't work.

The Amnesty bill will send the message to 6 billion poor 3rd world people that all they have to do is get here to the U.S. anyway they can and then Kennedy and McCain will give them Amnesty. How many billions of illiterate people you think the U.S. can take before there is a total bankruptcy and collapse of the economy and social programs? how many of these poor, illiterates are you willing to take into your house?

We can’t let billions of uneducated, poor people come to the U.S.A like that amnesty bill will allow to come here to take our land, jobs, resources, social security, Medicare, and ruin our country . We have laws. and people can’t just break them. I can’t move into your house can I? .If we have open borders then 2 billion 3rd world illiterate people will move to the U.S.A.there are 6 billion poor people in the world.

Also many Islamic terrorists are and have been getting into the U.S.A through the southern border. And Kennedy-McCain wants to give them Amnesty. How will these villians live with themselves when they detonate a nuke in a U.S. city? Build Duncan Hunter's double Fence. CLose the border NOW. Only Duncan Hunter or Tancredo can get us out of this mess.

I don’t really care if poor 3rd worlders ruined their countries just like I don’t care if some bum lives on the street. they did it to themselves. I don’t have any obligation to take in that bum or to take in 200 million socialists into my country to ruin the last hope of freedom on earth. My only obligation is to myself and to survive.

Bush has abandoned the strong base that put him in power. So says Peggy Noonan (former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan and chief speechwriter to Vice President George Bush during his campaign for the presidency) in the Opinion Journal:
President Bush has torn the conservative coalition asunder.

Mr. Bush won in 1988 by saying he would govern as Reagan had. Yet he did not understand he'd been elected to Reagan's third term. He thought he'd been elected because they liked him. And so he raised taxes, sundered a hard-won coalition, and found himself shocked to lose his party the presidency, and for eight long and consequential years. He had many virtues, but he wasted his inheritance.

Bush the younger came forward, presented himself as a conservative, garnered all the frustrated hopes of his party, turned them into victory, and not nine months later was handed a historical trauma that left his country rallied around him, lifting him, and his party bonded to him. He was disciplined and often daring, but in time he sundered the party that rallied to him, and broke his coalition into pieces. He threw away his inheritance. I do not understand such squandering. . . "

In short, GWB has abandoned his conservative supporters by advocating amnesty for Mexican illegals. He is also pushing for the North American Union in secret, behind the scenes. In effect, our President is secretly advocating the abolition of the United States of America. Michael Savage was ripping Bush apart on Friday. Savage may lead the mob that will surely march demanding further action against the president later.
