He and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the bill is the result of a number of tradeoffs. They challenged opponents to put forward another solution that takes account of what Mr. Chertoff called "real life, as opposed to theoretical arguments about what would be nice."
1. Fence
2. Wall
3. Wall
4. Fence

There is one amnesty I do favor.

Amnesty for US Border Patrol agents sent to prison for doing their sworn patriotic duty.

But that’s one amnesty neither Presidente Bush nor Soldado Snow seem to have the slightest interest in.

"And it is right to take political risk for members of the United States Congress..."

If any politicians get a chance to read this, take your dunce caps off a moment and consider:: Bush has no political future, has the lowest public opinion rating challenging that of any President in history, will not be in office after 1/20/2009, could possibly be removed from office from dereliction of duty before his current term expires, and might never hold another national office of public service; is THAT the example YOU want to imitate?

Please think a little before you consider taking your "political risk" and upon the validity of which you must make that decision....

I suspect that our President really does not understand the basis for the outrage by his former base. My concern is broader and deeper than the issue with illegal immigration. My concern is with the integrity of our lawmakers; that is, the ability of our government to actually keep a promise. With respect to the issue at hand, the more important problem is NOT how to deal compassionately with illegal aliens already here, as we did in 1986. The more important problem is to SECURE our borders. It seems like our lawmakers (both Republicans and Democrats) prefer OPEN borders, and, perhaps, one world classless government.

By repeatedly failing to implement promises to secure our borders, we have compounded the problem seven fold. Most recently the Congress placated the desire of the people for a border fence by including it in legislation, then pulled the rug by failing to provide funding.

You stop the leak before you get out the mops and buckets. In 1986 when Reagan granted amnesty to illegals without securing our borders, what we have today is what many lawmakers wanted, only instead of three million we have 20 to 193 million illegals. We encouraged more foreigners to illegally enter our country. By placing those already here in the front of the line instead of dealing with the source of the problem, we are reapplying a failed policy. The Republicans apparently want to get on the bandwagon of implementing failed policies like the Democrats.

Furthermore, the problem is deeper than that. Illegals are desired by companies because the corporations can avoid the tremendous burden of the socialistic and costly government rules and regulations and taxes for health care, workman’s compensation, meeting diversity quotas, required training (sexual harassment, diversity, safety, etc.), social security taxes, and more. Many, many years ago employers could go to the town square, pick out a few workers, get the job done, and move on. Those days are so far gone that it is hard to believe that existed at one time.

We should just secure our borders, and then take the time needed to rework our immigration policy, including how best to deal with illegals in a just and compassionate manner.

We need a president who owes allegiance to nothing other than the United States and its people. In particular, the GOP needs to convince the world that it is not part of some stupid globalist conspiracy and that says no more CFR members or members of any other secret or quasi-secret societiesfor president.

I’ve faxed both my Republican Senators but have received no replies yet - of course, they are awfully busy, and their staffs are occupied too dealing with angry constituents like me. So I don’t know what else to do except sound off in threads like this.

Venting helps a little, and here is my vent. Bush is destroying the Republican Party. He has not only driven away the “Reagan Democrats” but he has now turned on his hardcore case (of which I have been one.) I have never been a “neo;” I’m a paleo-conservative and really have no place to go. I’ll probably just sit on my hands and watch the sunset.

The president pleaded with senators to "show courage and resolve" to withstand outrage from voters in their districts.

Esto es muy malo el Presidente.

We thought Bush would be the next Reagan, instead he’s the second coming of Carter. Is Bush’s Presidential Library going up in Mexico? It would be fitting as he’s so helpful to the Mexicans.

We're being accused of "nit-picking" the amnesty bill.

This bill is larger than the Holy Bible and the senators themselves haven't read all of the fine print within it.

Any bill worth passing is worth reading in its entirety and subject to public debate BEFORE PASSAGE!

They all know it stinks and they are trying to ram it down our throats in the dead of night.

It's a turd they want American citizens to eat.

Did anyone not pay attention pre Sept 11th 2001? Bush was falling all over himself to work with then mexican president Vicente Fox over U.S. border/immigration issues, he was prepared to give him the whole enchilada when he hit a snag when the WTC was destroyed. The clown vicente was flying all over the USA acting as if he himself was POTUS. On reflection, maybe he was working for Bush to soften up the American people.

Folks, let’s face it, Bush is nothing more than a tar baby at this point. You know that he won’t change position on this issue and that he has nothing to lose by staying entrenched. Focus your energy on Congress to kill this bill in its tracks and stop beating against the walls of the White House. Deny the RNC/GOP your resources of time and money also. Dry up the RINO watering hole. Do what you can to show your disdain to business and special interest groups who are working to support this bill. Call your local chamber of commerce and let them know how you feel.

Bush is a free-trading globalist who thinks that if you can get a worker in another country to do the work for a dime less than the American worker, it’s a good thing. He only hears from the people who have access to him, like the Chamber of Commerce, who tell him how wonderful cheap illegal labor is, and how it is driving the economy.

He doesn’t see the other side of it like we do, because he lives in a mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue. He doesn’t have to wait in line at the emergency room in the hospital with a broken arm, because 5 families without health insurance are getting treated for the flu. He doesn’t see cities turned into crime-ridden dumps. He doesn’t see the trash in the streets, as the poor illegals just dump it on the curb. His school taxes aren’t skyrocketing.

What he fails to appreciate, what the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t tell him, is that illegals are a net drain on society. Businesses are able to operate more profitably due to cheap labor. We benefit from that in some ways. Cheaper prices, higher stock prices. But there is no way that those benefits equal the negatives. I believe the Heritage Foundation calculated each illegal costs the taxpayer $20,000 per year. I would rather pay a dollar more services and commodities if they were done by legal Americans, rather than paying three dollars more in taxes to support the illegals.
