Bush scolds balking GOP

By Stephen Dinan and Ralph Z. Hallow THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 2, 2007

President Bush yesterday renewed his attack on Republicans who oppose his immigration bill, again charging that they are trying to "frighten people" and calling on supporters to rally around the compromise.

The president pleaded with senators to "show courage and resolve" to withstand outrage from voters in their districts.

"It is right to argue for what you believe and recognize that compromise might be necessary to move the bill along. And it is right to take political risk for members of the United States Congress," Mr. Bush said in his second impassioned plea this week on the issue and the second time that he has accused Republicans of trying to scare voters by labeling provisions in the bill an "amnesty."

But many Republican senators say the bill is both an amnesty and unworkable and argue that Mr. Bush's barbs are off the mark.

"I'm not going around frightening people. People are frightened, and they're trying to scare the politicians into voting the way they want them to," said Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican, whose opposition to the bill has earned him standing ovations at speeches and events back home during the past week.

Mr. Bush's challenge followed a speech in Georgia on Tuesday that infuriated Republican opponents of his bill. And the renewed challenge came just a day after White House press secretary Tony Snow said the administration was trying to "lower the temperature and get people to talk about basic principles."

The fight is taking a serious toll on Republicans. The Washington Times reported yesterday that small donations to the Republican National Committee have dropped by an estimated 40 percent

I'm calling and e-mailing my senators and Bush almost every day. If this disaster of a bill passes, we can kiss our country goodbye.

Why hasn’t he spoken up to his opposition like he is doing to his party?

Traditional conservatives are his opposition.

“Worst Republican President ever!”

If you really believe this statement, then you are a fool. In your twisted world, was Reagan the previous holder of the “worst Republican President ever” title?

After all, Reagan did grant amnesty in 1986. According to your rationale, that would have made Reagan the worst, right?

If the moderate republicans don't get it from this mere fact they will never get it. I think moderates might even hunker down to try and defend any conservative press.

Conservatives, we are in for a fight and we better be willing to take it on! We HAVE to have a conservative majority in the repub party before we ever have a snowball's chance in hell of ever beating the DBM/dems again.

Maybe thats what he means.

"Stand up to those voters who wont give you money or organize for you or vote for you again!" Easy to say when your gone is a year anyway, we'll see how 'showing courage and resolve" does for Lindsey Graham next election.

Poor Tony Snow, having to carry water for Bush in this fiasco. Snow should publically resign over having to speak out in support of the immigration bill — and go back to the news where he can do some good.

No Border Fence Has Already Cost 45,625 Innocent U.S. Lives

Minuteman Border Fence Costs: $1.3 Million per mile

Federal Government Fence Costs: $4,000,000 per mile

NO FENCE - DOING NOTHING - AMNESTY Costs: 45,625 innocent U.S. killed by illegal aliens since September 11, 2001.

More Americans are murdered each year by illegal aliens than have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

White House: Instant amnesty for illegals living in your backyard - It's a Reality.

The choice is yours Do Nothing, Complain or Secure the Border!

Why is it that the proponents of this terrible bill always say “ we can’t possibly deport 12 million criminal immigrants” We have many more than 12 million people who smoke pot in this country, and yet we don’t hear the same argument about them? The government seems hell bent on rounding them up and putting them in jail. Let’s give them amnesty! (of course they will have to pay a fine and return to their home first). And why does ANYONE believe the government will do it right this time? They have absolutely ZERO credibility on the issue.

Reagan's amnesty was a mistake as well, but a much smaller mistake when it comes to the number of illegals. They fooled us in '86, but they won't fool us again (although they seem to have fooled you). Also, I had to spend two tours in Iraq under Bush's inept "leadership" as CIC. While I'm in Iraq, Bush is back here refusing to secure the borders to import cheap labor. I think that Reagan was an awesome CIC. You're the one who is living in a "twisted" world. I'm sure the Bush loves having suckers like you around.

I’m a Democrat, however, I did cross the lines and vote for President Bush in 2004.

A question that is nagging at me a bit: was I wrong to do so?

I had two reasons for voting for President Bush in 2004. First, the WOT. I thought that Pres. Bush was essentially right on Iraq. Second, I thought that Sen. John Kerry would be much worse.

I stand back and look at it and I wonder if Sen. Kerry really *could* have been any worse. He wouldn’t have had the support of a pliant Congress (which at that point was controlled by the GOP), and he would have galvanized the conservative opposition.

And on the WOT, I wonder how effectively the WOT can continue to be prosecuted by a President who has the support of probably less than a third of the population. He’s a lame duck, and what was his own base is more or less openly looking forward to 1-20-09.

Was I wrong to support and vote for President Bush in 2004?

I looked at your post history. You are the enemy, a globalist corporate lawyer from NY. You also managed to brag about how much money you make (150k-200k). Congrats! You're one of the worst Bush apologists I've seen here.

Like he did? If he would have had this as a campaign promise than I can see him saying this, but he did not.

Etc. but still I supported you.

This though is the last straw.

Illegal immigration and your support for amnesty is just plain wrong.

Ditto!

Seal the borders, enforce the existing laws! Then we'll talk

There it is, and it only took 2 sentences.

Wow! That is a tough question. Actually you were right to vote for him. Kerry would have left Iraq immediately and possibly have the terrorists over here. This immagration situation will probably not pass so this could end up ok. I would be interesting to hear other people’s answer though.
