“Horror Under The Head Scarf”
By Stephen Brown
FrontPageMagazine.com | June 26, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Honor murder is not an insignificant problem in Germany. The Federal Crime Office (Germany’s FBI) registered 48 honor homicides between 1996 and 2006 with a further 22 people surviving attempted honor killings. The youngest victim was a 14-year-old, married Muslim girl. And like her, most of the victims were young, Muslim women, while a few were men.

An additional two honor killings were barely averted only last March in Munich when another Turkish man, living in Germany for 32 years, tried to kill his 18-year-old daughter and her German boyfriend on a busy open street. The father had disapproved of the daughter’s relationship, beaten her many times and had threatened to kill her. The young couple managed to escape the attack and contact the police.”

Warden Message: Kosovo Demonstrations
U.S. Embassy Pristina released the following Warden Message on June 25:

From June 23-July 2, a variety of political gatherings and demonstrations have been announced in several Kosovo locations, including but not limited to north Mitrovica, Gracanica, and Gazimestan on June 28 and Pristina on June 30. These gatherings may involve large numbers of individuals as well as the presence of police, street blockages, and detours.

U.S. Office Pristina (USOP) reminds American citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid roadblocks or areas where large crowds are gathered, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should also continue to monitor local news concerning ongoing events.

In the event further information is obtained regarding this or any other security or safety situation in Kosovo, USOP will provide updates via this same channel and on the Mission’s web site: http://pristina.usmission.gov . American citizens may contact USOP during working hours by calling +381 38 5959 3000 ext 3119. USOP’s duty officer may be reached after hours via this same number or at +377 44 153 594.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where all current Worldwide Cautions, Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, and health- information resources can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
