Sears corporate officials have apologized to two police officers who were told to leave the retailer's store at a Des Moines mall because their uniforms distracted the store's security guards.
Officers Richard Glade and David Coy said they were kicked out of the Sears store in Merle Hay Mall in separate incidents this month.
"They told me that while I was in the store, I'd probably interfere with thefts they were monitoring," Coy said. "I said, 'Well, that's great.' She said, 'No, it's not,' and that they paid people to monitor that activity."
Kimberly Freely, a Sears spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., described the episode as a case of mistaken identity.
"Our store management was attempting to address an ongoing issue of excessive socialization between mall security officers and store associates, which had been hampering associates' productivity," Freely said in a statement. "In no way was this an attempt to prevent on- or off-duty officers from shopping at our store."
Glade said he joined his wife at the store to buy a dishwasher when he was kicked out Monday. Glade said he asked for permission to take his morning break and went to Sears to help his wife shop.
"I don't think I was in the store for three minutes when I was asked to leave," he said.
"The guy was grinning the whole time he was asking me to leave. He said I was a deterrent to the store. Then he threw me out."
The Glades decided to buy the dishwasher elsewhere.

Many of us have decided to buy stuff elsewhere.
Most places would be happy to have some uniformed police officers shopping there.
In New Orleans, it was the “officers” ripping off the store.

I just threw away a Sears Kenmore dishwasher....piece of junk. I’ve had nothing but trouble with their dishwasher (broke & replaced), washing machine (broke & replaced), refrigerator (twice repaired), and dryer (broke & replaced.) The stove is holding up just fine, but we’ll probably replace it to match the new dishwasher.
Now I know why Sears hawks insurance with all their appliances. They are pieces of junk.
Sears needs to (publicly?) reprimand this guy. Firing I leave to their option.
But hey, I hardly shop at Sears anymore and if it goes to zero, who'd notice?

With a REAL cop in the store, crime might be deterred, thereby not giving the wannabe the opportunity or need to flex his manliness and "authority", thereby negating the need for his job, but also negating his usefulness in life.
That officer must have given the Sears associate a ticket in the past.
Sears tried to blame their weak 1Q earnings today on the price of gas.
What a joke.
Last time I was in a Sears was about 2 years ago. Heard they were having a clearance on a certain widget (an appliance). I knew who made that widget for Sears and it is the best brand out there. (Same brand also makes cheapos and Sears sells the cheapos too.)
Bought $800.00 worth at around $20 a pop. Cleaned them out. Lowest I got on eBay for them was $70.00.
The last time I was in a Sears before that? Hmmm... Oh, I know. I went in about 6 years ago to buy a wrench to replace one I borrowed and lost.
I have worked with plenty of their appliances. Depends who makes them as to whether they are any good or not. But always a crap shoot unless you know who made the item.

I have had Kenmores for years and so have my folks have Sears for years and years and never needed repairs except belts when they wear out!
Washers, Dryers, Stoves and Frigs
How well I know. I have installed plenty Kenmore dishwashers.

For 15 years I regularly broke a $20 Craftsman tool at least two to three times a year in the course of my job and took them all back for the lifetime guaranteed replacement.
I figure my $20 (actually it was $60 because I lost it twice and bought new ones) purchase cost them over $600-$700.
My mom/dad’s Sears Kenmore clothes dryer worked for 26 years without a service call.
