Lott Gets Heat About Support for Immigration Bill (Protest at his Jackson Ms Office)

Protesters by the dozens carried signs, like "Security First, Amnesty Never," outside the Jackson office of Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott on Thursday. It was a shot at proposed legislation and Sen. Lott, who says the bill is not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

"Sen. Lott has stated people in Mississippi have no problems with this bill, but as you see now, we are a cross section of Mississippi and we are very opposed to this bill," said Kim Wade of the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement, or MFIRE.

Senate Bill 1348 adds more border patrol agents and erects 300 miles of barriers. A temporary worker program would require workers to go home after two years and re-register.

And the 12 million or so illegal aliens already here could have the chance to become citizens. That's the part of the bill that has so many taking a hard stand against it.

"They're breaking the law just by being here," said protester Robbie Hughes. "And it's costing Mississippi a tremendous amount of dollars."

About $62 million a year, according to State Auditor Phil Bryant. His latest figures show 122,000 illegal immigrants in Mississippi, leaving taxpayers with the bill for health care, education, and public safety.

Lott says it would be impossible to locate and deport all the illegal aliens already in the U.S. He said "they should have to pay a fine, undergo background checks, be constantly employed and pay taxes, and go to the back of the line for citizenship papers, all required in this bill. And if I can make these provisions even stronger, I will."

"If nothing else, take a step back and give us time to go over the bill in detail and hash it out. But at this point, there's no way this bill can be supported in any form or fashion," said Wade.

The rally was co-sponsored by Eagle Forum of Mississippi and the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement.

Every RINO who supports this shAMNESTY bill needs to be taken out in the primaries.

Agreed. I don't care who they are or what they have done - this is a deal-breaker for me.

Anybody who votes for this deserves to find himself voted out of office. Period.

Trent will retire in 2012... and that is just toooooo long! I hope Congressman Chip Pickering replaces him. Gene Taylor the dim will try... but he is a socialist and enigma... a Military supporting, NRA endorsed socialist who is in favor of higher taxes, the Death tax, and wealth redistribution.

We could have voted for the dim commie that ran against him.

Trent was unopposed and considering retiring. A Republican Congressman looked certain to replace him. Trent needed some more $$$$$ after Katrina and losing his home, so he ran again unopposed. You REALLY wouldn’t like the dim dog that would have been his alternative. Having said that... he needs to go in 2012!

If you saw an opportunity for others to keep the “entitlement coffers” full, would you object?

Their dissent won’t be heard until their “check” quits coming.

Good idea, but Republican voters will go along with their incumbents because they will be “warned” that unless those particular incumbents are renominated, the Democrat will take the seat. Witness: PA in 2004 and RI in 2006.

You are so right. Trent would have been in the “slow learners” class if MS had had such classes way back then.

The problem is that people in SC won’t admit they were wrong to nominate and elect Graham. They will keep him there just to show their stubbornness.

Simple: the pollsters are telling the politicians what the politicians want to hear! The pollsters want to keep working too.

Lott probably won’t run again in 2012 — and he could not possibly be interested in what the “average” MS person thinks about anything. He truly is a projection of nearly as much arrogance as his “defender” GWB!

He says it would be impossible to locate all the illegal aliens, so how can they be forced by law to pay a fine, undergo background checks, pay taxes, apply for citizenship if they can’t be located????

"Lott says it would be impossible to locate and deport all the illegal aliens already in the U.S."

Yet he thinks we can make them pay a fine and register? If we can't find them ... that's circular thinking at its best!

I suspect the amnesty on back taxes for illegals is also amnesty for
the perfidious skunks that employed them as well.
And who would otherwise be subjected to IRS hell and stiff Federal
penalties for not paying Social Security, FICA and other taxes on
their low-cost illegal employees.

“Why else would Lott and other politicians be trying to steamroll amnesty for millions illegals?”

I’m beginning to think they’ve gotten threats—only reasonable explanation.

Something akin to the friends of Bill type situation...though in this case don’t know who’s directing the threats.

No other explanation makes sense. Reasonable people making totally unreasonable decisions for this country...
