Lott Gets Heat About Support for Immigration Bill (Protest at his Jackson Ms Office)

Protesters by the dozens carried signs, like "Security First, Amnesty Never," outside the Jackson office of Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott on Thursday. It was a shot at proposed legislation and Sen. Lott, who says the bill is not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

"Sen. Lott has stated people in Mississippi have no problems with this bill, but as you see now, we are a cross section of Mississippi and we are very opposed to this bill," said Kim Wade of the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement, or MFIRE.

Senate Bill 1348 adds more border patrol agents and erects 300 miles of barriers. A temporary worker program would require workers to go home after two years and re-register.

And the 12 million or so illegal aliens already here could have the chance to become citizens. That's the part of the bill that has so many taking a hard stand against it.

"They're breaking the law just by being here," said protester Robbie Hughes. "And it's costing Mississippi a tremendous amount of dollars."

About $62 million a year, according to State Auditor Phil Bryant. His latest figures show 122,000 illegal immigrants in Mississippi, leaving taxpayers with the bill for health care, education, and public safety.

Lott says it would be impossible to locate and deport all the illegal aliens already in the U.S. He said "they should have to pay a fine, undergo background checks, be constantly employed and pay taxes, and go to the back of the line for citizenship papers, all required in this bill. And if I can make these provisions even stronger, I will."

"If nothing else, take a step back and give us time to go over the bill in detail and hash it out. But at this point, there's no way this bill can be supported in any form or fashion," said Wade.

The rally was co-sponsored by Eagle Forum of Mississippi and the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement.

Talk about world class reporting!!

Journalism seems to attract the intellectual dregs left over after the garbage collection jobs are all taken.

Mexico got them to leave. Why can't we?

Blacks should be raising hell about the bill. I’ll leave it at that.

Well, MS re-elected this spineless weasel last year, so they’re partially responsible for this.

Lott says it would be impossible to locate and deport all the illegal aliens already in the U.S.

But somehow we're going to get them all to pay a fine and do a background check on them within 24 hours of the visa application.

Right.

Next.

I heard something disturbing on FNC about 30 minutes ago.. someone who worked for a Senator said that they are being told by pollsters that 2/3rds of the people support what is in the bill, and the protesters and those who are calling are just a misinformed minority... I would love to know where the 2/3rds support number comes from...

“Every RINO who supports this shAMNESTY bill needs to be taken out in the primaries.”

Lott has had his last election- he’ll serve 5 more years and retire. He thought about not running last time. So he’s probably worried about some nice fat lobbying job from a business group- he could care less about the voters now.

I'd like to see Lindsey Graham as the #1 target. Perhaps a PAC can be organized in time for the 2008 primaries. Perhaps it can be named "RINO Hunt PAC"

I sent him an email last week. I told him that I was very upset that he supported this agreement. I also told him that I went to MSU so I knew I was smarter than he was! Have not heard back from him.

That was the first thing I said to my wife while
watching this on the news.

We can’t find them to send them back but we
can find them to fine them.

Just an observation:

Immigration came out just as Reid and Pelosi had essentially gutted any credibility or mandate the new congress had. They allowed funding of the war to roll through, and they’ve passed virtually nothing since they’ve been installed.

So, as the Dems begin to factionalize themselves, what does the White House do?

Let’s legalize 37 million Mexicans. I know the number is that high, because 10 million filed IRS tax returns this year. The press bats around 12MM, but that would mean 5 in 6 actually obeyed the IRS regulations, and that can’t be.

I didn’t think it would come to this, but you’ve got to question the capability of your President in this situation.
